Is it possible to extend the steering column (think mine is a cortina) when in a comfortable position in the car i am at full stretch to reach the wheel?

add a spacer?

I had the same problem (Sierra column). I found that the sliding spring-loaded bit (technical term!) had slid right down to the most compressed position. Unbolting the top clamp, pulling it up and rebolting moved it closer by an inch or so IIRC.

Otherwise, a spacer would do it, if you could get a piece turned similar to the Sparco one. I got a removable boss made up which also effectively acts as a spacer but I realised afterwards that I could have got a whole replacement section for part of the Mountney boss made up as it is in two parts. Not very well described - sorry!

I had to fit a Mountney collapsible spacer to pass SVA with a Mountney wheel - moves wheel back by about 3 to 4 inches - 2 birds with one stone!

Thinking about one of the deep dish steering wheels with a 3 inch dish??
