do i need a cat on my R1 haynes roadster?
tony@signtek.net - 18/7/11 at 07:29 PM

Hello all

Just finished my build!!!!

Now thinking is my R1 (5pw 2003) with a R1 (2006) can going to give me trouble with emissions?

Have fitted a power commander although havent a clue how to set it up and would appreciate suggestions on who can do this for me and if this alone would sort out the IVA emissions test or is it simple enough to do myself?

Regards

Tony

Hi Tony, For a 2003 you will almost certainly need a cat. Believe its done on engine age (which you'll have to prove) and 2003 would be a CAT.

Unless it already has one in the silencer? i'm not up on bike silencers, so i'm not sure on that one

Have a chat with LBMEFM (barry) he's in DEAL and has a power commander i believe, might beable to give you a hand setting it up....

Hello Ben

How you doing!!

I was hoping the 2006 can may have a cat integral ,maybe i'll phone Yamaha dealer tomorrow

Sure i read somewhere that the power commander would help if mapped properly

Be handy if anyone knows

Tony

Yes, the power commander will help a great deal... especially if you have a cat already in that can !!

As i said, give barry a U2U with your email address attached (as U2U's dont let you know via email when they come) and if he can give advise.

Although i thought they were supposed to be fairly easy to use? you got an instruction manual?

You will need a cat' as any engine that is post '95 has to meet the BETs test emmision levels. Even if your exhaust does have an integral cat' then it's unlikely to be big enough to get the car through. Bike emmisions are more lax than car ones so a smaller cat is fitted.
You will need the PowerCommander to set the mixture and get it to a level that will pass. That will require some time with a 4gas tester or your just guessing and won't get close.

You can get catalytic converters on ebay quite reasonably priced, about £40 for a 400 cell which should be up to the job and available in various tube sizes.
