hello there

regarding the air valves that i understand allow air into the exhaust ports, that live in on top of the rocker cover on the zx9r engine.. all they really needed??? i am trying to keep things tidy and getting rid of any unnecessary stuff. I assume that these are to burn off any unburnt fuel, but without them will i get through sva (will need cat anyway) and if they are not there will i get loads of backfiring as the fuel eventually burns????

Ive left them on, so dont know if it will give you a problem if you block them up.
I must say though that when we put a cat kit on we blocked them up for the SVA.
And yes you will need a cat to get through the SVA.

Well - I removed the pipes, opened the covers and Araldited stainless bolts into the holes to block them and put them back on.

Well thats sorted that.

Don't know if it affected the SVA or not though - I was informed at the time that it would not, but who knows??????

SVA was a pig - I would suggest just spend the money and hire a lambda kit and and a CAT - even with it it was a pain ....

It looks like you have a similar arrangement to that on the Blackbird engine.

I have looked into this a bit, and also the Honda manual as I also wanted to simplify the pipework etc.

It seems that the valves allow air into the exhaust to burn of any fuel on overrun to help reduce overall emissions.

The air flow is controlled by reed valves under the covers on the cam cover. The valves allow air into the exhaust only on overrun, so I don't think it will affect SVA emmissions testing at all, as this is done at a constant engine speed and therefore throttle opening (Valves will be closed!).

I have removed the valves on my Bird engine and blanked of the ports with Aluminium plates. Don't anticipate any issues with this at SVA.

I have seen some engines that have retained the reed valves and control solonoid and fitted the feed pipe with a small air filter instead of air feed from the airbox.

I'm using the standard air box (reversed). with the valves in place. I used a fiesta cat. I fitted air bleed valves but ended up leaving them fully closed. Passed S.V.A. first time. Make sure you get the engine red hot before the emmision test.
