Engine Rebuild Questions / Costs...?
chutley - 21/5/17 at 06:07 PM

Chaps - time to bite the bullet and rebuild the 2007 ZZR1400 engine.

Any idea of rough costs of the standard parts expected plus labour? (Engine will be removed and delivered to the builder).

After a rebuild, do you need to run it in?

How would you do that if it is a trackway only car..?

I would seriously look for a low milage replacement.

The availability of oversize pistons, and undersize bearings, plus machining costs will probably exceed the cost of a replacement.

Yes you would need to run a newly machined engine in, if you want it to last.

A lot depends on what's worn/damaged.

Not sure with kawasaki but on the R1 engine you cannot get over size crank bearings, so the crank can't be reground.
So any scoring etc on the crank means replacement crank time.

What's wrong with the engine?

Engine has always suffered with excessive crankcase pressure and breathing, so catch tank fitted to catch oil. Blyton yesterday and oil temperature was too high. Started smoking out of catch tank breather (really!). Then started to make a whirring metal grating noise, so stopped.

No idea what it is, but I think a rebuild is needed.

Not sure where you're based but worth a call to Andy Bates at AB Performane in Suffolk. He's had a ZZR1400 in for a rebuild in the past week or so - so should be able to give you a better idea of what might be needed and the time / costs involved than pretty much anyone

Spoke with Andy at AB - very helpful.

Suspect rebuild cost is now going to be too expensive, so taking his advice I am going to drop in a replacement engine.

Sorry to hear its terminal for the ZZR

I know they are very complex engines as Andy was telling me himself the amount of time required to strip one down - so not surprised he's recommended a new engine. Good luck finding a replacement anyway and hope you get back on track soon (and at least it will be run in)
