Blackbird balancer shaft removal???
colimp66 - 24/9/18 at 04:37 PM

Hi,
Not been on here for quite some time as I have had slow progress with Imp.
I happen to have my Blackbird engine partially stripped to check it over and possibly modify the sumo for gimprovedd ground clearance.
I have read on several forums regarding the Blackbird motor and its reliability. The normal mod is to remove the balancer shaft i believe which helps to prevent number 4 rod from being starved of oil..
Anyone done this mod and did it make a difference to how the engine behaved? Did it vibrate more, noisier perhaps, make more power or was there no difference for driveability??
If it helps to prevent a failure i would prefer to remove it whilst i am in there.
The car will be mostly used on the road.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers
Col

So a bit of progress with my Blackbird engine. Basically the crankshaft was fubered and i have one on its way as a replacement, should have it this week.
I the meantime i have stripped the motor and removed the balancer shafts. The oil feed to the shafts have been locked with an M8 bolt cut down and slotted after i drilled and tapped the oilways.
Flush out all the oilways of swarf and wiped it all down.

Cheers
Col

Should be great when finished. I always loved the look of modified Imps.
