Does anyone have any recommendations for reasonable insurance?
I am 24 and have just become the very proud owner of a Stuart Taylor LocoBlade....
PS Does anyone use the Yahoo BEC group? It's a load of knackers compared to this little bad boy
Adrian Flux ? Buy a kit-car mag and look at the ads in the back
BEC group has LOADS of very helpful and knowledgable people on it, but the Yahoo format is sh*t compared to this forum. We've offered to give them a
site like this for their very own, but they weren't interested, shame.
Seconded on the Adrian Flux recommendation, they just quoted me £42 for garage/bild cover, then £131 fully comp 3k miles per year, absolute
bargain.

Excellent, cheers guys. Just phoned Adrian Flux and the quoted me £250 which beats my next best quote by about £200!!
Compared to the £1100 I was going to pay to insure a Honda Integra R I'd say that's damn good value.
I must admit I haven't got past the impenetrable barrier of the dismal format on the Yahoo forum to actually see if the info is any good....
Try Footman James or MSM Insurance, both kit specialists.
By the way I can beat £1100, how does £4270 sound! (360 Modena)
Im with Backford Bloor, quite good as they do an agreed value policy so you are guaranteed a pay out of X amount if it gets written off or stolen etc.
This is a good thing in my mind as its impossible to have a "market" value of a car like this, and some companies could well use this to their
advantage in the event of a payout.
On the subject of Yahoo, I agree that the format of the BEC list on there isnt such a good medium as a proper forum such as this, as threads can get a
little lost, but a lot of people can't / dont go onto websites regularly (because of work restrictions etc), but with Yahoo you can subscribe and get
all the messages by E-Mail and never need to go on the website at all, so it has its advantages too.
Also, don't ignore it just cos you don't like the format, no offence to anyone on here, but I'm sure anyone who frequents that list as well will agree
that the depth of BEC knowledge on there goes far beyond our collective knowledge here.
cheers

All paid up now. Went with 'Sureterm' - just over £300 for fully comp. guaranteed value of £7500 with a years cover for track days.
(Piece of mind is important - if I fully stack it into some armco, at least I'll get some money to pay for my recovery!!).
Cheers for the info.
Thats a pretty good price for track day cover and also guaranteed value, will bear them in mind when I renew in April. How much is the excess on the
track, I assume it isnt the same as for a road claim?
cheers
Chris
Not BEC related, but i got quoted £8000 for a GSXR 600 when i was 24!!!!!!!!!
Sureterm just quoted me £138 on an agreed value of £6k which has got to be good. He cant quote me for track day cover till I'm ready to insure...
Well you guys must live in an even better place than I do.
Sureterm just quoted me £252 for £7k value 5k miles / year no claims/accidents etc 33 years old, full NCB, garaged in east anglia.
No impressed by that quote
My bike insurance is less than that and that's far more accident prone (and nickable) than the locost.
That isnt too bad for agreed value to be honest, and Jasper, are you sure you told them it was a BEC, and not just a 900cc kit car? If they dont know
its a BEC, and you try to make a claim, you will more than likely be stuffed. Some people got away with this a couple of years ago, but I think the
insurance companies are now wise to the BEC phenomenon, and so load the premiums accordingly, considering their performance as well as just plain old

"Not BEC related, but i got quoted £8000 for a GSXR 600 when i was 24!!!!!!!!!"
When I was 24 (1990) I had a ZZR1100 - I paid about £600.
Now have GSXR1300R and pay £350!!!
One advantage to ageing, I suppose!!

Chris - I did tell them it was a BEC, even what engine it was.
Blimey, that is a bloody good price then, it must simply be that you're far too old then Jasper
My track excess is £1500 (compared to £350 on the road) which could be good or could be bad for all I know. I reasoned that a minor crash will be easy
enough to fix up myself but, for a major one, I'd like to at least know I was able to get the majority of my investment back.
Interestingly, they originally quoted me over £400 just for road insurance then phoned me back later that evening (pushy insurance peops - don't you
love 'em ) and beat my previous road quote (Adrian Flux) by £4 (plus £90 for track) with an extra £20 off if I took it there and then.
Originally, I was going to ignore them (as a punishment for being pushy) and go with Adrian Flux anyway but, as it turned out the following day, Flux
wouldn't do track day insurance so I had no choice. They also still gave me the £20 off even though I refused to commit there and then.
I'd never had this experience before - actually being able to bargain with an insurance company. Usually, for normal road cars, when I tell them my
best quote in the hope they can match/beat it, they just say 'good luck to you mate, we can't beat that'.
Ah right my excess would only be £100, benefits of being an old(ish) fart
Still thought £252 was a bit high though. I may look to see if I can get a parts only policy as if I bend it I would rather fix it myself.
And if I bend it then I would rather you fixed it too!
£4000 for a modena? hah, that's nothing, how about £10000 for a 100bhp VW polo, unmodified, in a nice area, garaged, with alarm and imobiliser. That's
pretty much saying, "You are definately going to write it off within a year, and you'll probably do some pretty severe damage to someone else's car
too". Needless to say, I didn't take it, but I'd say the average quote (average for the ones that actually bothered to quote me rather than just
telling me to wee off, or transfering me to the never answering phone) was about £5000, in the end the lowest I got was around the £2000 mark!!
In comparison 900cc BEC 3rd party with 3000 miles p/a was around the £400 mark IIRC. So, stop whinging!!!

Andy, I bet your excess on the track wouldnt be that low though, most track day insurers have excesses between £1000-£2000, even if the road part of
the policy is nice and low. One of the reasons I havent bothered with it, if I did more than £2k's worth of damage on track, I'd realistically be too
busy thanking him upstairs that I got out OK to worry about the extra it was going to cost to rebuild!
Just for interest, I paid £270 from Backford Bloor last April (Age 26, 1 claim 3 years ago (full NCB on car policy), 3500miles/year, guaranteed £7k
value, car garaged in Sussex). The lowest I was quoted was around £220, but that wasnt guaranteed value.
Chris
You lot make me sick! Some of your premiums are less than my monthly payment on my 306 Cabrio. Still, it can only get better I suppose.
Grrrr....
Chris
Looking in MCN this lunchtime, they've got an article about insurance premiums. The price of insurance on a hayabusa goes from somewhere around £10000
for a 17 year old, to about £300 for a 60 year old!!
They're still pretty pricey even for a 45 y.o. though - £650 odd IIRC.
I think there were only two companies who even quoted for the 17 year old on a busa.

Thankyou for you valueable and interesting insight into my personally, should I ever require a phychologist, I'll be sure to make you the first person
I turn to.

BTW, I'm not 17, I've never owned a scalectrix set, I don't think I'm the best driver in the world and I fully accept that insurance is based on
statistics. I could flame you to bits now, but frankly I can't be bothered and I'd just be lowering myself.
Kingr,
Don't take offence at my retort.
Just don't make your posts pointed and agressive. You specifically finished your post with "stop whinging!!!" with no smiley and this I took as
agressive in tone. Had you posted in a similar vain to Chris which I took to be in a joking manner then I wouldn't have posted at all.
BTW: You really should get a Scalextric set as they are awfully good fun
It wasn't meant as an attack, more frustration than anything. Admittedly, finishing with a smilie would have changed the tone (or more precisely, made
it obvious), but I avoid using smilies too much or else when I'm tired and not really concentrating at work, I can find myself putting them into
emails, obviously not a good thing to do. I've already caught myself a few times before signing an email kingr!!

So it's not handbags (or shock absorbers) at dawn now then ????

Do Sureterm insure under 21's? The best qoute i got was about £400 through i think Adrian Flux.
