Which sausage filter do I need?
Avoneer - 2/3/06 at 05:39 PM

Anyone know which sausage filter I need for a dynojeted '97 blade?

Cheers,

Pat...

tadltd - 2/3/06 at 06:24 PM

Yep - an ITG JC40. U2U me for more info...

Confused but excited. - 2/3/06 at 06:35 PM

I've heard of multi fuel engines but sausages is a new one.
Clever these Japanese!

indykid - 2/3/06 at 07:19 PM

lmao!

Avoneer - 2/3/06 at 07:26 PM

Would the JC40 be suitable for a ZX12R as well?

Cheers,

Pat...

Hellfire - 2/3/06 at 07:34 PM

Yep. JC40S50 IIRC

JoelP - 2/3/06 at 07:39 PM

pats thinking of an upgrade already!

Is it the same for a zx9? and how do they mount onto the carbs?!

tadltd - 2/3/06 at 07:43 PM

The JC40 is the very same filter we used on our ZX12, sir!

It's the same for the ZX9. A blank baseplate is sold seperately for fitment. You can drill it for mounting to the throttle bodies and cut out the holes for the intake trumpets.

You want them, you know who to ask...

*ahem*

Hellfire - 2/3/06 at 08:03 PM

To see how it fits, have a look here 19th April 2005

[Edited on 2-3-06 by Hellfire]

Avoneer - 2/3/06 at 08:05 PM

Tad - if I get a few folk interested, are we looking at a minor Locost/Group Buy discount?

Cheers,

Pat...

Gav - 2/3/06 at 08:06 PM

id be interested

tadltd - 2/3/06 at 08:08 PM

All Locostbuilders members already receive a discount (up to 15% where possible), but I should be able to sort something out provided I get enough orders.

Avoneer - 2/3/06 at 08:15 PM

Cool.

I don't mind collecting all the money (again) and giving you one large order if that's ok with everyone - should be easier this way.

Steve - what's the maximum price a filter and blank base plate would be before any discount?

I'll definately have one, probably Carl as well, and Joel and Gav - that's 4 generated already just because of my post ;-)

Cheers,

Pat...

tadltd - 2/3/06 at 08:24 PM

I need a minimum of 5 orders to provide the 15% maximum discount off the normal RRP prices. I've just U2U'd Gav with some prices - perhaps he can post the RRP's on here as I don't think I'm allowed to...

Bob C - 2/3/06 at 08:27 PM

Avoneer/Tad - count me in for one:
(can't stand those unfiltered sausages)
Bob C
PS - '98 carbed R1 - I hope I'm asking about the right filter.....

[Edited on 2/3/06 by Bob C]

JoelP - 2/3/06 at 08:48 PM

me too, a definate

whos supplying them?! lol

tadltd - 2/3/06 at 08:50 PM

Just for info the JC40 filter is ideal for BEC's and will cover virtually all bike engines (except V's), from 'Blade/R1 to ZX12/Busa.

The only real difference is the height of the filter. You need to ensure that there is at least a 25mm gap from the trumpet opening to the inside of the filter foam, otherwise it won't work efficiently.

The JC40 can be had in 25, 40, 65, and 100mm heights (all the same price). What you need to do is measure from the mounting point of the base plate (i.e. the throttle body/carb opening where the trumpet fits in) to the trumpet opening, then add 25mm to this to ensure you have enough of a gap.

E.G.

Throttle body opening to trumpet opening = 30mm. +25mm = 55mm.

So you need to order a JC40/65 giving a 35mm clearance to the trumpet opening.

A JC40/40 would only give 15mm.

Pay attention at the back!

Danozeman - 2/3/06 at 09:36 PM

I would be in price depending..

Is this for filter and baseplate?

Avoneer - 2/3/06 at 11:01 PM

Right - I guess I'll take control and try and sort this.

Without making any profit, but trying to simplify the order, prices as follows:

Normal filter with blank baseplate - £77 delivered.

Sausage filter with blank baseplate - £92 delivered.

If everyone who's interested can post which filter they want on here, I'll do the rest.

How does that sound?

Pat...

Avoneer - 2/3/06 at 11:13 PM

I'll start the ball rolling.

My base to trumpet lip is 30mm on my '97 blade.

So I'll need a 65mm thick filter.

That's a JC40/65 sausage filter and blank plate.

£92.00.

Thanks.

Pat...

Bob C - 2/3/06 at 11:29 PM

Pat - good you're online - what's the difference between a normal and a sausage filter? (apart from £!5)??
Bob

Gav - 2/3/06 at 11:42 PM

ill second that pat

Avoneer - 3/3/06 at 12:06 AM

Both same footprint.

Sausage has rounded profiled corners where the normal filter has "vertical" sides and right angle corners around the top.

Gav - you having the same as me?

Pat...

Gav - 3/3/06 at 09:28 AM

but ill check tonight to make sure

speed8 - 3/3/06 at 10:39 AM

What height would I need for an injected R1 (2003). I'm nowhere near my engine so if someone can check theirs and let me know then I will likely be in.

Avoneer - 3/3/06 at 12:04 PM

Carl - what height filter do you need - or are you in tonight and I'll pop over.

Chill - what size do you want.

Speed8 - Don't know, sorry.

Gav - should be the same - will take a pic tonight and post on here.

Pat...

carlgeldard - 3/3/06 at 12:37 PM

Email sent but I will be in tonight you can take that gear linkage and alloy sheets.

Carl

Danozeman - 3/3/06 at 12:40 PM

Il take a sausage please. Ill measure tonight and see what hieght i need.

Bob C - 3/3/06 at 12:57 PM

Righty ho - I'll take a normal filter then please. I think I need a JC40/25 as I've machined the carb inputs into V short trumpets like Richard Miles did. Avoneer - can u u2u me payment details etc.
cheers

Bob

JoelP - 3/3/06 at 01:33 PM

my trumpets stick out 15mm, so i need a 40mm sausage. Likewise pat, send me your address and i'll post a cheque

ChrisGamlin - 3/3/06 at 01:46 PM

Speed8, Im not sure exactly but my old ITG filter is approximately 70mm high in total and the R1 trumpets fit under easily. I'll have a look at the weekend and get some proper dimensions if I remember

Avoneer - 3/3/06 at 05:47 PM

Hi Gav,

Here's my engine:

Gav - 3/3/06 at 07:50 PM

How do people want to pay?

Cheque, bank transfer or paypal?

Pat...

Gav - 3/3/06 at 08:45 PM

paypal is fine for me

ch1ll1 - 3/3/06 at 08:47 PM

paypal is fine by me !
or you tell me !

got a big jar full of pennies

Avoneer - 3/3/06 at 09:02 PM

Paypal is fine as long as you don't mind the 3.4% + 20p.

That'd make it £95.33 for a sausage filter and base plate.

Pat...

JoelP - 3/3/06 at 09:54 PM

sod it, i'll do paypal too. Is it your linked email address pat?

Bob C - 3/3/06 at 10:43 PM

Are we paying via Pat or straight to Steve? Do we need to add P&P? (I assume the £77 includes VAT - ?)I should be able to do Paypal or cheque - whatever suits best.
cheers
Bob
PS OK looked back - £77 delivered - sounds good to me!

[Edited on 3/3/06 by Bob C]

ChrisGamlin - 5/3/06 at 08:25 PM

As promised, here's the ITG backplate as fitted to my 2003 R1:

ITG Backplate on 2003 R1 - 1
ITG Backplate on 2003 R1 - 1

ITG Backplate on 2003 R1 - 2
ITG Backplate on 2003 R1 - 2

As you can see the intake rubbers only stick out above the plate by about 10mm so you wouldnt need a particularly high filter if you haven't got room. For info, the holes needed in the backplate to secure the rubbers are precisely 50mm if I remember correctly, so nice and easy to cut with a suitably sized hole punch once you've measured out the spacing.

cheers

Chris

Avoneer - 5/3/06 at 10:37 PM

Cheers Chris.

Speed8 - if you're interested, I think you need a JC40/40 filter.

I have a pinto with GSXR 600 carbs fitted. I have read all of the post and nothing is mention reading cec with bike Carbs. Will this sausage filter suit this application.

The JC40 will fit if you haven't adjusted the spacing on the carbs. If you have, then you may need the JC50. E-mail me and I'll send a fact sheet with dimensional information to check.

Update email from Steve:

Dear Customer, Many thanks for your recent order, but we must inform you that there has been a delay in the shipment from ITG. They have received unprecedented order levels and have a large backlog of filter orders that they are currently trying to clear. Estimated time for delivery to us is the 24th or 27th March.   We appreciate that some of you placed your orders back in February and can only apologise for this situation, which is beyond our control. We normally try to keep decent stock levels to avoid such scenarios.   We thank you for your patience in the meantime and will keep you informed of progress. Best Regards,

Sorry if that inconvieniences any of you and appologies for any delays.

Also for info - all filters will be going directly to yourselves and not to me to distribute.

Pat...

ch1ll1 - 22/3/06 at 08:01 AM

I was just about to ask what sort of time scale delivery was.

never mind

Danozeman - 22/3/06 at 03:27 PM

I was wondering this morning when theyd arrive. Not that i need it for a while yet.

No rush theyl get here when they get here.

Avoneer - 22/3/06 at 10:40 PM

Had another email from Steve.

He's gonna be sending out all the backplates so at least we can all be ready.

Reason ITG are struggling is that Cosworth have bought lots of filters for their F1 engines and they are struggling to keep up.

At least we're 2nd in the queue to someone important.

Sorry guys - what more can I do

Shit Joel. I guess you don't have the same postie as me. Mine actually came out to my garage to say he'd just popped some car bits in my postbox. Considering my garage is not next to my flat I'd say he done well.

I haven't opened it though, too busy playing with my other goodies. Will check tomorrow though.

Am I right in thinking I need a minimum of a JC40/25 for a carbed R1?

Thanks
Rich

Ferrino - 6/4/06 at 05:34 PM

Yep that's what I'm using on my R1, as I want to get it under the bonnet.

carlgeldard - 6/4/06 at 08:19 PM

I've just got my filter tonight thats another sexy piece of kit to add to my collection.

Bob C - 6/4/06 at 08:59 PM

I'm supposing my filter came today - then back to the royal mail depot.....
RichiC I've gone for JC40/25 - I'll post a pic tomorrow if you want, I've cut the holes in it already, just waiting to whack the foam on

PS crankcase breather pipe - are we feeding that into the air filter???

tadltd - 6/4/06 at 09:11 PM

Crankcase breather - vent that to atmosphere (through a sperate filter) or better still, into a catch tank - I hear coke cans are good catch tanks... I'm sure someone will come up with a better 'locost' idea in a minute...

Bob C - 7/4/06 at 11:51 AM

Aha - why not (crank breather into filter) - do the foam filters not like the oil?
How are the catch tanks arranged,- do you "bubble" the crankcase fumes through what oil's in there or is it just an open space where you hope it will condense out?
Bob C
PS on my last car it was just a pipe pointing at the road...

tadltd - 7/4/06 at 01:04 PM

You really only want fuel and air in your combustion chamber, not a cocktail that includes a manky oil/water combination! The catch tank is usually just a small alloy tank, with a drain on the bottom and two spigots, one for the oil/water from the crankcase to go in, the other to vent to atmosphere. There can be a 'fill level' sight tube to let you know when it needs drained.

It's just to collect the mixture instead of it going onto the road. The fumes are usually filtered to atmosphere from this.

I can make one for you or we can do Mocal ones starting from £69.00 + VAT for a 1 litre one.

JOELP!!

Your filter was returned to me! I'll send it on again - please be home!!

JoelP - 7/4/06 at 02:55 PM

hi steve! i seem to be the troublesome customer here! I sent the plate back today, should arrive in the morning. How come they didnt leave a missed parcel ticket when they tried?! Im never in during the day Cheers!

the crank vent on the zx9 doesnt produce any output apparently (says my friend whos hammered one for a while) his vents to atmosphere and there is no sign of any mess anywhere.

My filter HAS arrived in good shape & ta for the input about catch tanks!

PS I'll brew something "locost" I think......

speed8 - 7/4/06 at 05:18 PM

Got my filter. I'm gaining a bunch of stickers for my 'ricer' locost.

Bob C - 7/4/06 at 10:19 PM

Back to filters - Rich here are a couple of snaps of mine in situ

It will actually be about 1/2inch high for my bonnet so a small scoop will have to be made; I'm not sure whether or not to try & regain that 1/2inch by moving the filter down as far as possible (ie now I've done the job I don't want to do it again - would mean cutting out a new backplate & the sucking bits wouldn't be in the iddle any more - ahhhh decisions........
Bob

JoelP - 7/4/06 at 10:22 PM

my bonnet is currently bent around the filter i borrowed, still shuts over them but i'll need to sort a vent out to make it perminant.

JoelP - 8/4/06 at 08:13 AM

the bastard got me up at 7am! But its arrived, cheers to all involved it looks well nice!

Winston Todge - 19/5/06 at 07:29 PM

Hey all,

Just curious about the people that fitted this filter to a carbed R1? Did they retain the rubber trumpets?

I really want to keep the trumpets and was curious as to how this was possible?

I was thinking seperate air filter cocks might be an easier fitment?

Thanks for any advice.

Chris.

Winston Todge - 19/5/06 at 07:30 PM

Obviously I meant socks!!

Not entirely sure that I could fit all the Big Brother contestants under my bonnet...

Chris.

Bryan Sears - 19/5/06 at 08:57 PM

Chris have you got your old air box if you turn it around and cut it down it will just fit under the MNR bonnet. You have to turn the trumpets round as well. I have had a go and it looks ok. Some say that it is a better to keep the air box than use the foam filters. There will be less induction noise for SVA noise test and it costs nothing. Bryan

Winston Todge - 20/5/06 at 09:04 AM

I agree Bryan, hence the U2U for pictures!

I was just fairly unsure of whether the standard airbox would fit under the VortX bonnet.

Anyone else used air socks on their R1?

Or used the trumpets on one of these sausage filters?

Thanks,

Chris.

Bryan Sears - 20/5/06 at 09:52 AM

This is still under development as the bonnet is flexible it does just touch the top but as the top is flat I don’t think this will cause a problem.
I have not tried it yet.
I will try it with some foam strips on top to see if it stops the bonnet vibrate.
Or I could cut a bit more off. Either way I don’t think I have lost anything by having a go. Maybe someone has some thoughts that could help. I think I have seen pictures of one done before but cant remember where. Rescued attachment DSCF0032.JPG

Has anyone thought of raising the nosecone bonnet and scuttle by fitting a rubber strip along the top of the side panels or would this not work. Rescued attachment DSCF0003.JPG
