Trackday Noise Limits
Ferrino - 24/7/06 at 01:27 PM

Was wondering what the protocol is for measuring static BEC noise limits on trackdays? Do they measure at 3/4 of rev limit or something? And are they savvy as to the rev limit of the various engines yet?

Unfortunately they do measure at 3/4 revs (usually) and they have enough savvy to know what the revs should be usually.

Problem is it's all very well passing a static test by lowering the revs but you will still often get done on a drive-by meter.

What is the standar noise limit for a track day?

abouy 95db??

Thats about the same as a power drill i think?

Mine is louder than that i am sure!!

not as low as 95 mate unless you go to a 'Posher' track like donnington

I only got 97 with a standard r1 Can

I was looking at doing a 100dB airfield day - feck, at 9000 RPM mine has gotta be pretty close to that! Will get it tested methinks.

R1minimagic - 24/7/06 at 03:56 PM

Mine was tested a CC at 102dB with the standard R1 airbox and can at 7500rpm. However, i was told that when going round the track it was one of the quietest cars there!!

Ive found there is usually a bit of "artistic license" you can use on the peak revs, especially if you aren't using the bike clocks so its not immediately obvious where the red line is.

I was tested the other day at Oulton Park, and I measured 97dBa @7500rpm (I said it revved to 10k ). That was with a carbon R1 can and sausage filter.

Ferrino - 24/7/06 at 04:51 PM

Hmmm, looks do-able then with a '10K limit', as I also have carbon R1 can and sausage filter. I think it's easy to tweak to max displayed revs on my digital dash

skydivepaul - 24/7/06 at 08:31 PM

it all depends on which track day you are doing. most will go on the 2/3rds max revs which also gives you a bit more leeway as opposed to the 3/4 max
mine reads 99db to 104db depending on who is using the sound meter!!!!!

R1 engine with pipercross filter and mk exhaust.

smart51 - 25/7/06 at 07:03 AM

My R1 engined car reads 101dB(a) at 8800 RPM on an uncalibrated meter. I have a 6" x 26" repackable stainless silencer on a 4 into 1 headder. Should be fine for the 105dB circuits.

where do they take the reading cos mine is alot louder on the exhaust side!

Rupert

skydivepaul - 25/7/06 at 09:07 AM

unfortunatley they take the reading at the exhaust side.
it should be 0.5 metre from the exhaust exit @ 45 degrees
reading at 2/3 max rpm

smart51 - 25/7/06 at 11:07 AM

Readings are usually taken at 3/4 max revs. My car is louder 0.5m from the bonnet on the exhaust side than it is 0.5m from the tailpipe.

R1minimagic - 26/7/06 at 05:18 PM

Which circuits are 105db??

richard thomas - 26/7/06 at 09:56 PM

What's the limit during SVA? is it more or less that the average trackday limit?

Rich.

Ferrino - 9/8/06 at 04:36 PM

In the end I was tested at 7,000 RPM and made 99 dB (limit 100!) so just scraped through! This is with standard R1 can.
