ZX9R NO SPARK
Chris7 - 18/8/06 at 09:20 AM

Hi

Guys

I have aZX9R C1 does any one know any good wiring guys apart from the oracle steve keenan as he is fully booked

Using a Sierra Ignition
Orginal bike ignition
Vicky Green Loom

all the wiring is in and connected

we have no spark / and no power to fuel pump

Does anybody know what the 4 wires out of the bike ignition are connected to as somthing tells me where missing somthing here.

plus me and charlie are getting splinters from scratching our head so any help would be apprieciated thanks Chris

Sounds as if you haven't got the 100Ohm resistor in the gray wire that takes a positive feed to the ECU.
Unfortunately, my scribbled on haynes manual is at home and I can't remember what colours the others are.
Someone should be along soon, if they're not, I'll post the details when I leave work

Have you got a 100ohm resistor connected to the ecu? if not it wont spark. i'll have to dig out the wiring diagram to tell you which wire it needs to be on. Somewhere i have a wiring diagram that i got from ST which i can copy for you if need be. Live to fuel pump is from ignition switch.
Al.

Al
Could I have a copy of the ST diagram if you can find it?
Cheers
Steve

So i still need a resistor even though i am using the bike ignition as an anti theft becasue if you put a peter across it gives 9.5v instead of 12v

if you have a copy of the stuart taylor diagram that would be good thanks Chris

PS if any billy wizzes out there would like to have a look for me the car is maltby rotherham.

Thanks Chris

if your using the bikes ignition switch (key)
then im sure you dont need one
but if your putting it to a sierra ignition then you will need it !

i get this alot with mine (b4)
when ive played with the wiring,
i have to disconect the battery and reconnect it and it ok then!

have you had it running at some point ?

Tangerine Scream - 18/8/06 at 10:15 AM

From your original post, I assumed you were using the sierra ignition switch with the bike ignition system - in that case you would need the resistor.
If you are using the complete bike ignition system and the original switch, AFAIK you don't need the resistor because, as you said, it gives the required voltage drop in the switch.
I have the bike ignition system wired to the sierra switch and it definitely needed the resistor. I found this out as I managed to forget it despite having read it many times before

ch1ll1 - 18/8/06 at 10:16 AM

or even better forget that engine and give it to me !
got a nice sierra engine to swap with you

Spooky... I had this problem too!
I experimented by changing the resistor to one that had a higher wattage and it stopped doing it. Don't know why it worked?

I've an 'E' model wiring diagram in my archive. It is similar to the 'C' model so it might be helpful

Oi, diagram is here!

Dave

That's the one
Saves me going home early (not!)
Resistor goes between white and grey

Hi
Guys

yes i am using the sierra ignition which is wired to the vicky green loom

i then have the bike ignition which has three wires
Grey
White
Brown

i have grey to grey vg/bike loom
White / green Live on Vicky Green loom
Brown to Brown

Thanks Chris

Tangerine Scream - 18/8/06 at 11:05 AM

Sounds about right.

White 12v feed from battery
Grey switched to ECU (I have this wired to posn I on the sierra switch)
Brown main ignition (wired to posn II on the sierra switch)

Then again, I have basically added the (very few) extra wires into a complete bike loom. I've no experience of the Vicki Green loom.

the 100ohm resistor goes into the grey wire to the ecu.

rj - 15/9/06 at 08:34 PM

hi ,I have a very similar problem, ZX9R engine C1 ,I have got it turning on the starter, fuel pump is running ,but no spark,I have tried 2 different 100 ohm resistors wired into the ecu feed but still no spark,is the wattage of the resistor critical? help !

schnelle bak - 15/9/06 at 09:45 PM

no it's just got to be 100 ohm , you can take a look at my website beneath the engine button, you will get some answers

Peteff - 15/9/06 at 10:31 PM

Connect the 100ohm resistor between the grey and the white battery wire to give the correct power to the cdi ?

kipper - 16/9/06 at 06:20 PM

Wadders,
could you do a copy of the diagramme to me or scan it and post here? there seems to be a lot of interest.

rj - 20/9/06 at 09:02 PM

Hi thanks for those answers,I think I have made all the correct connections, fitted correct resistor in the right place ,but still no spark ! I am beginning to wonder if the ECU is faulty, does anyone know who could test it,or if I could try my ECU in someones working car ?

Andy W - 20/9/06 at 09:22 PM

Have you got the side stand and clutch switch shorted out

Andy

rj - 20/9/06 at 09:54 PM

thanks Andy ,yes ,I have got clutch & sidestand switches shorted out,I dont think it would turn on the starter without.

ch1ll1 - 21/9/06 at 07:10 AM

send me your addy and i will post you a resistor to try

had to buy 200 of the babys so got a few spare

thats if you want to try one

ch1ll1 - 29/9/06 at 07:12 AM

did you get them?

rj - 12/10/06 at 03:46 PM

thanks for the resistors Paul,I still have no spark. I suspect the ecu could be faulty, so if there is anyone within a few miles of me,with aZX9R C1 (or C2?) could I try my ecu on your car? then at least I will know if mine is broke before spending money on a replacement , thanks

JoelP - 12/10/06 at 05:50 PM

theres mine in north leeds if no one closer has one to BORROW!

rj - 13/10/06 at 09:36 PM

thanks Joel ,Leeds is good for me ,can we speak to arrange a time ? my home no is 01709 570423 mobile 07818 845132, I am in Leeds on monday if that suits you, (I tried U2U but not sure if it worked)

rj - 25/10/06 at 11:24 AM

Hi, thanks for all help and advice,I have finally got a spark ! it turned out to be a knackered cam sensor - a regular zx9 problem I am told, simple to check ,just test resistance - it should be between 400 and 460 ohms, mine was open circuit, now why didnt I check that weeks ago !!!
