I am thinking about fitting a bike engine to my car as i need more power and cant fit the zetec i have as its to tall and would mean major bodywork
mods. The main problem I have is that my drive slopes down to my garage and i think I really would need a reverse gear.
I cant afford and dont want to fit a clunky mechanical reverse box but am not sure if an electric reverse can be fitted to a live axle due to the axle
and prop movement.
As I see it i can try and fit something to the engine end of the propshaft maybe using a geared starter motor and small ring gear on the output shaft
or something similiar to that on the axle or at the centre bearing nut the ring gear size would be limited.
Alternatively i have had thoughts about removing the gearbox bell housing and most of the internal parts from the type 9 and modifying the input shaft
to connect to the engine drive shaft.
I know this will be heavier but it would give a reliable reverse gear and I could keep the 5 gear as an overdrive ratio.

if your fitting a bike engine, your gonna need a 2 piece prop with a centre bearing anyway, so the front part of the prop won't move with the
axle.
i would say it is possible, but probably won't be cheap and there will be a lot of trial and error.
the other thing to consider is the weigh, you really need a BEC to be less than 500kg, sticking a type 9 bellhousing in+all the gubbins for the
reverse may mean you don't gain as much if you work out the power to weight ratio.
also the lowest diff you'll get for a live axle is 3.54:1 which may only give a low top speed.

I need to do it as cheaply as possible so am considering diy options. I am happy to make my own speed controller etc and have machine facilitys so
neednt cost to much..I have the 2 peice prop already and favor the option of something attached to the front end of it.
I know weight is a consideration but how much would a stripped out type 9 weigh in comparison to a reverse box or electric reverse system?.The good
point about using a type 9 is that i could keep my 3.89 diff and use the 5th gear to get a decent top speed. My car weighed 560kg at SVA and im sure i
would loose a good bit by changing from the crossflow and stripping out the gearbox as the bell housing alone must be quite heavy.

sounds ok,
what about having the prop adapter made with a ring gear around the outside edge, and mounting a motor to the engine cradle, sort of hinged?
i saw one before with the bike sprocket still attached(with the prop adapter welded to it, and a piece of chain wrapped around the sprocket then a
hinged motor with a sprocket that meshed into the chain.
if you understand what i mean (would be easier with a picture i know)

Thats the lines i am thinking on , i just need to get some idea of what to use and start collecting the parts. It is going to be a winter project as I
want to get as much use out of the existing engine and play with the injection system before i do the swap.I then need to decide whether I am going to
fit megasquirt to the blade engine as i already have a working system on the car, or should I stick to the carbs? It seems a shame to not use the fuel
injection.
