Oil Pressure....... how much???
MOz - 30/4/07 at 12:57 PM

Recently changed the clutch springs and oil on the IndyBird. Went from fully synth to semi synth oil and followed Sean's advice and filled to just over the max mark on the dipstick once the accusump had been fully charged.

It now runs much better (clutchwise) but I have found a film of oil on the rightside of the engine bay and suspect it has been blowing out the breather (which I have no idea of where it is on a Blackbird engine......).

The oil pressure guage seems to be reading higher than it did before. Really pushing it, it rises as high as 80 PSI, and general bumbling around reads 60 PSI. At tickover it reads 25-30 now but was lower than that on fully synth thru out the rev range.

I know semi synth is thicker than fully synth, but can this be enough to raise the engine oil pressure??? Also, is having too much pressure a bad thing (I guess it is) and if so how much is too much????

Again, nieve worrying but worry it is!

Thats the sort of pressure I saw on my Bird on semi oil and accusump.

It was called the cat, lost sump plug survived, blew an oil cooler hose on track, caught fire and still lives on.

Hi Moz

Oil pressure sounds about wright to me it did used to run around 75 psi and 80 at full chat.

would be around 55-60 on normal runs and tickover 25 psi,

not too much change there the pressure relief vallve is woeking ok so should be no probs.

glad the cluth is better more power to the road now ????????????

not sure on the breather though just double check oil levels and see if it settles at some point.

Good luck

Hope she is still running good may see you at stoneleigh if your there monday.

There isn't a breather on the drivers side. I had soemthing similar on mine, it turned out I hadn't done the filler plug up fully and as the clutch is behind it, is was throwing out a little oil. Also check the dipstick is fully done up.

My ZX12r Blew about a litre of hot oil out into the floor pan this weekend..

Was rather disturbed about it at 190km/h but further investigation revealed it was the gearbox breather and not a blown oil line.. this pipe is now routed into the top of the dry sump rez
