What donor to use?
n3il123 - 29/6/09 at 03:04 PM

Hi all... having missed out on the cortina that I was orignally after I was just wondering what else I can use as a suitable donor motor... I am new to this so not looking for anything complicated to convert!!

The bits I have are

Front uprights
Rear axle
Diff
Type 9 (I think!) gearbox
Rear brakes
Stearing rack

THinking the things I need from the donor are:

Loom
Engine
Some wheels (even just for building it!)
Steering column
Rad
Instruments

erm!

Was wondering whether something like an escort (mk3 on) or fiesta would fit the bill or would I just be asking for a whole load of complicated trouble?!

So any suggestions on what I should be looking for would be greatly appreciated!!

With what you have already - then dont bother with a donor. Just buy the bits you need like engine and steering column to suit what you are building.

Loom - well this is one area i would no look to reuse an old one (unless its for a bike engine) so get a new one (or make your own from scratch. Electrics is probably the biggest trouble area and pretty much every car is different so i always look to wire from scratch myself and put each wire exactly where i want it.

Don't use a Ford Scorpio whatever you do, most expensive spare parts ever and a real pain in the rear

Wiring is painless if you take it one bit at a time and test everything before moving on to the next part. And ask questions if you are not sure about anything, I am new on here too and the folks are fantastic, allways willing to help.

Here is a little wiring guide which might help you.

you'd be as well (in time anyway) to buy the parts you need seperately.

however! if you could find a ford sierra for example, that would give you an Engine, Some wheels that would fit your cortina uprights, Steering column, Rad, and Instruments

the rest of the bits you could sell and maybe break even. but not always the most practical solution, as you need somewhere to work and keep all the bits.

Thats what I was thinking.. if I could find an escort for a couple of hundred, I have all the RWD bits so I could use the bits from the escort and then sell say the interior etc and then just weigh in the shell... I have plenty of room to do it
