hi everyone,
can anyone tell me if the axle fron a 1986 capri 1.6 laser will fit the book chassis? and will the front propshaft splines fit into the sierra
gearbox?
im hoping to use 2ltr pinto+box.
also, has anyone ever thought to utilise an old caravan in the building of their car?
confused?
well i was just given a 1970s two berth tourer by an uncle (you can get really scruffy ones for fifty quid in the loot), the body is aluminium (enough
to make the body), and with a little bit of welding and two fabricated ramps i will have a rather cheap car trailer ideal for going for the sva and to
shows.
p.s nice site, will visit often.
Later Capris have an axle that is 4 inches wider than the Escort. The wider axle would work well with a Sierra based front suspension.
The shaft may or may not fit the 5 speed --- Fords tended mix and match gearboxes on Capris 1600 depending on what was available.
However the 4 speed boxes used in Capris were good boxes and the Sierras 5th gear isn't a major bonus in a Locost which has the aerodynamics of
a brick wall.
The axle ratio should be 3.77
My Capri axle is 2" wider than an Escort (the Cortina axle is 4" wider), has a ratio of 3.75:1. The shaft fits my type 9 box, and your 1.6 Lazer should have a 5 speed type 9 fitted anyway.

My capri axle is from a 'W' reg 2.0S and is 2" wider than the Escort one I have in the shed from backplate to backplate. Check the
splines as some gearboxes have a 30mm output and some 35mm. As stated earlier the Capri ratios are better suited to locost driving as 1st gear is
longer

Mine is from an '84 1.6 Lazer funnily enough.

I can't remember exactly when it was from but I used to have a MK1 Escort and used to read all the stuff in CCC and the like. The rally buffs used to mention rocket boxes and bullet boxes (2000E) as upgrades for standard stuff. I have a type 9 5 speed in mine and a lot of the time 1st gear is redundant.
Going back as far as 1967 only
Bullet box was an close ratio version of the Cortina Mk2/Corsair V4 box
2000e Was the semi-close version of the same box used in the 2000e Corsair, 1600E, MK2 Lotus Cortina and Mexico
A lot of people confuse the normal MK2 Cortina box with the 2000e box they are the same externally but the the ratios are very different.
Rocket was a close ratio version of the heavy duty Type E box used in some 2 litre Mk3-5 Cortina and the RS2000
Lotus Elans from 66 on used a gerbox built from a combination of 2000e internals and Anglia/Mk1 Cortina bits.
