Capri 2.0GL 1983
jimmy - 31/8/02 at 08:37 PM

Just bought a capri 2.0GL Y reg.
It has a pinto in it with a weber carb on it, and runs sweet but pinks slightly under load. The thing is I forgot to ask what it runs on I assumed it will run on 4 star but is there a way of telling?

I'd suggest the handbook, or any markings around the filler cap.

Hi,

All pinto injection engines run on unleaded, if it's a carb engine look for P or PP or R or RR cast on the cylinder head near the no1 spark plug. if it has these markings it is suitable for unleaded.

Pinking could also be the timing, get the strobe out!

Cheers

Chris

Thanks for replies.
I have a strobe light and I've had a quick look at the dizzy but can't seem to see a nut on the body to undo to rotate it or should I be looking inside it (don't have a haynes manual yet).
Haven't had chance yet to check for markings on head, but if it is leaded what is involved or what will it cost to convert?
P.S Great these strobie things, might invite the neigbours round and have a disco...

Hi Jimmmy,

The adjustment bolt is into the block holding a clamp to the bottom of the dizzy not on the dizzy it's self.

The easiest thing is to get another head from the scrappy - £20ish. Converting your head is about £100, you take them the bare head and they put hardened inserts on the exhaust side(the inlet doesn't need them).

Don't forget the twiglets is you're having a party!

Cheers

what is it about twiglets? All parties have them, nobody eats them!

Cheers chris,
Found it.
There are four or five timing marks on the pulley, so using No. 1 cylinder I've timed it to the last mark or first which ever way you look at it,and after a spin all is well no pinking just induction roar from DGAV32/36.
P.S Is it a big job swapping head?

I eat Twiglets.

Bloody lovely.

Til you're sat on the toilet the next day.

Then they're not so lovely.

not too bad to swap a head. Exhaust manifold off - six bolts, inlet complete with carb - six bolts, rocker cover off, ten(little) bolts, head bolts, ten of them, either 12 spline or T55 socket required.

Rebuild with new head, exhaust & inlet gaskets, er..........20 minutes?

Plus time for the twiglets, obviously

Cheers

Eventually I will have to change head as LRP becomes far too expensive but will the pinto go through the dreaded SVA as it is with it being a 1983?

Any one know about Kent engines and unleaded conversions?

theconrodkid - 1/9/02 at 08:32 PM

The kent will have to have new seats,i use a lead addative from WURTH and have never had a problem in all the years ive been using lead free.

johnston - 1/9/02 at 09:19 PM

millars is good too
2 kinds ones just a lead additive and ones an octane booster 2

we used to use the octane boost on avgas on the rally cars the guy doin the mappin was surprised that it worked
