My Parants Montego Estate is on its last legs, and it has been offered to me in the near future if i want it.
Apparantly it has a good 2l engine.
Does anyone know if this will make a good or crap donor car?
My current whims are verging towards a trike with 2 front wheels. front engined and so probably front wheel driven - unless anyone knows of a feasable
way to tranmit to the back?
2 no seating arangment in line.
I would go for the second choice on the question.
"Does anyone know if this will make a good or crap donor car?"
The engine may be fine but I can't see anything else being of much use, sorry mate.
Might be ok for a front wheel drive "kit". But depends heavily on the front hubs.
I've heard that it will fit in a Landrover.

If it's an 'O' series engine (I think it is), you can stick an LT77 box on it (as in the 2litre Rover SD1) to make it rear-drive.
It would be unconscionable of me to recommend anything front wheel drive.
Cheers,
Neil
Thats the one. I here a few people who race landrovers in classic hill rallies swap for the diesel montego engine as they are allowed to use it
because it is from BL.

P.S. my post was inspired by your avatar.

I forgot to mention that it is a petrol!
btw. If you had a trike, 2f1r, with 2 seats 1 behind the over, is it possable to have a front engined rear wheel driven vehicle?
Diesel engines from transits and LDV covoys/sherpas/montegos etc are all quite common LR engine conversions.
Anyone built a diesel Locost yet? the range of diesels available in new cars are pretty good!
To heavy for a trike --- trikes have legal weight limit
when 3 seires diesels come onto the market as shagged donors in 10+ years time, the 320d will be a fantastic choice. MASSES of torque, and the current
models give 150hp and in the one series its 165 hp.
This is from, i remind you, a 2 litre engine. Compare that to the piffling 115hp for a 2.0 litre sierra donor!

After a few searches, I believe the 2l engine i may have access to is an 'O' series, capable of 105bhp, (MG Montegos are rated at 115bhp,
with a 150bhp model somewhere too).
Aparantly the Austine Montego range was a replacement for the Rover SD1, and even won a Design Award! (I cant quite believe this bit either).
If a trike is too heavy, will it be classed as a car?
btw whats up with the hubs?
150bhp from an O-series!! Must have been pretty highly tuned.
"Early in the life of the Maestro, Harold Musgrove had expressed concerns over the viability of a turbocharged version of the Maestro, believing
that the extra complication would bring limited benefits. The company pushed ahead with the concept, but chose the larger and heavier Montego as a
vehicle for the forced-induction version in 1985. Initial problems with excessive torque steer that was so bad, that it overshadowed rest of the car,
and limited the MG Montego Turbo’s appeal to enthusiasts. The chassis engineers tamed this malady by 1987 – and the new management regime appreciated
that as worthy as the Maestro EFi was, to compete with the newly emerging 16-valve rivals, the 152BHP Turbo engine would need to be drafted in.
When the Turbocharged MG Maestro was finally announced at the NEC Motor show in 1988, it was as a limited run of 505 cars. The MG Maestro Turbo was
the last hurrah for the model, being pushed quite hard by the marketing department as a performance bargain (which it undoubtedly was, being
remarkably quick – 0-60mph, 6.8 seconds, 128 mph top speed), but again, in the image conscious Eighties, the styling of the Maestro was a positive
turn off to GTi buyers, Tickford designed bodykit or not. "

1598cc S-series 86 bhp
1994cc O-series 100 bhp
1994cc O-series EFi 115 bhp
Anyway, how far fetched is my choice?
Turbo ahh
The SD1 was replaced by the Rover 800 (the Honda Legend was it?) and was the last decent Rover (apart from the build quality. So bad, it's
funny.) . I'll except the 75. Which is quite good. Especially in rear-drive form. Everything else since then has had some some of
hybrid/household applicance philosophy applied to it. **Queue flames **
The Montego was brought in after the death the Marina/Ital.
I'm off to look for more medication now.
Cheers,
Neil.
after speaking to my father, wishing him happy new year 4 days late, i have found out he has the EFI model, with 96k miles on the clock. Apparantly it also has front disc brakes.
