Has one been done before? Plenty of these Bedford/Suzuki rascals rotting away. I reckon they make a perfect donor. Efficient 1000cc OHC motor.5 speed box.Solid axle. Surely a Locost can be knocked up for the magical £250 using one of these as a donor or am I hallucinating!
What could go wrong:
Axle a bit narrow?
Hard to increase power?
However, sounds great to me!

They are mid engined aren't they? Could that pose problems?
There are still plenty of rwd donors out there (all BMWs, most Mercs, pretty much any medium size van) it is just what has been done before.
MX-5 seems a great donor to me. Loads of bits can be re-used, there are a whole heap of tuning products already available, it's modern Jap
technology, and if you get a Jap import, you get a LSD as standard!
you tried getting a steering balljoint for bedford rascal?
no longer off-the shelf, and if you decide to order, that is £ 35 + VAT each
what are bedford midi steering/suspension parts like to get hold of?
Remember what the Hamster did when he tried to make the Rascal go round corners on Top Gear!!!!

Wasn't aware that dragster was in fact a Rascal!
I remember seeing a zxr750 powered rascal pickup a (ber?).went quite well
I searched MX5 parts the other day and either not much came up or they were dear does that sound about right

I reckon alot of the bedford racals used the block similar to that from a sj suzuki jeep and if so the suzuki 1.3 swift gti engine could be a possibility

... and the prop would probably the right length from standard.
A very similar thread about 4 years ago!

Different bit of nonsense from the show.

MX5 parts are very expensive in Canada - if you can get them at all - apart from the dealers, but that's just plain robbery. For example, I just paid a scrapper $285 cdn (use XE.com if you want conversions) for two rear hub assemblies (1993 and rusted).
The nice thing about the Rascal engine is that it's dead simple, relatively lightweight and tilted 45 deg so is low profile. Getting a good one is a bit of a gamble though: I've beeen looking for one for my van and been caught with a block that's trying to prove that oil and water DO mix
Specs here.
The next generation Carry used the 1.3 - same engine and trans as SJ410 and SJ413 4wd.
Axle may be a little narrow at 1200mm - wheel spacers or more offset on wheels?
Front seats have been used in book chassis - thread on here a while back about it.
Front end is Mac strut - Toyota Liteace has same pcd and suitable front-steer a-arm upright.
