Renault 21 transaxle

did the renault 21s come with a transaxle, and if so was it all of them or just better versions? thanks in advance!

As with virtually all Renault's, the 21's were a bit Mini-Metro, but the 21 Turbo came with a transaxle as the engine was longitudinally mounted. Some of them were 4WD though so that could be a problem. http://www.nfauto.co.uk/options.htm is worth checking.

Most widely available solution would be an FWD Audi box (from a non-rebadged VW). That's all of them except for the A2 and A3. FWD Impreza's are the same too.

changed my mind anyway cos the one i saw is in kent. bloody cheap though so heres the ebay link incase any of the southrons are interested. it is 2wd BTW:

All 2l 21s have a transaxle whether turbo or standard injection and they are fairly common - a good engine too.

All lesser models 1700 etc are transverse engined and a pile of poo.

Joel, im sure u know this but renault 25 also uses the UN1 gearbox- might be easier to find than 21 turbo- depends on your area i guess.

Im going with Audi myself. The GT40 boys use the 016 coz apparently its the strongest. The 016, ive been told, was fitted to the Audi 100 in the 1980's.

Would anyone be able to post a list of what cars and transaxles are available, i'm quite interested for future projects but a little confused. I seem to gather that some:

80's audi's
old renaults
fwd subaru's
volvos?

had transaxle drivetrains, can anyone help with a more specific list?

I know some people also use bellhousings to volkswagen gearboxes eg hewlands boxes...

Not Justy's, just the flat4 vehicles. Not just 80's Audi's.
Older Renault's, rear-engined VW's, front engined rear gearboxed Porches (924, 944, 968, 928). Rear Drive and gearboxed alfa's GTV, 75. Older (pre re-badged FIAT's) Alfa's (FWD)
Citroen DS and it's family... Lots more I dare say.

subaru dont do 2wd any more, havent in a while. i think the last ones were some of the first imprezzas, maybe the 1.5 ones.

Are any of these transaxles strong enough to hang the rear wishbones and suspension off or do you still need to build subframes around them?

when i was looking at different engines/donors i found that all audi 80/90/100/200/coupe/coupe gt/4000/5000 were all longitudinal fwd, then there are vw beetle of course and saab 900, alfa romeo 33 and also renault r8/r20/r30/r21. not sure if all those audis have the same box but are all vw engines iirc. i would imagine vw beetle box's are getting rare by now. those are all the ones in a random old page in my notebook, there are probably more but didnt put em in for some reason or other.

PS- to answer the original question, on a page in my note book it says the renault 21 models with the transaxle are the " '92 manager gtx and txi"

now theres a man with an idea! it would be wonderful if you could brace it enough to do it F1 style, bolt the car to the engine and the engine to the wheels!

dont think id trust the suspension top mounts to the gearbox, but the bone mounts are a possibility. ud have to have a look and see. saw and executive v6 r25 on ebay, cheap as chips. not enough poke, need a turbo for easy tunability!

i may well end up bolting my rover turbo to an audi/renault box, find a company to make a custom bellhousing.

Volvo 340/360 used a transaxle mounted in the rear and the engine up the front. The 360 GLT had a 5 speed 240 gearbox internals in the transaxle. Pretty tough.

i read somewhere that the 2000 was an american name for one version, maybe the 80/90/100, so i guess the 5000 is just a bigger one!

Yeah the Audi 5000 is the US term for an Audi 100. The Audi 80 is called a 4000 over there.
