Finally, my design-concept to cad to fabrication
Gakes - 12/4/08 at 03:27 PM

Hi guys and gals, time is flying and I still havent made a final design for my car till now.

From now on I will post all progress from concept to CAD to fabrication of the final car. After lots and lots and lots of sketches, and research and so so so many threads, I finally went for a collaboration of different materials and processes.

Here's the concept and some cad drawings i started:

Looking good

i like the floating suspension mounts
Seriously though it looks good! will be good to see the final car!

Looking forward to this one

to make this a bit more interesting, im going create a design brief for myself:

- it must be SABS approved, road legal
- it must incorporate safety structures (passengers and pedestrian)
- it must be low maintainance
- it must have a fun factor
- it must be designed to be manufacturable
- it must be inexpensive
- it must have a good fuel consumption

That's the criteria, so lets get going

Some more progress:

Looking good.

Apologies if you have already considered the below:

Before you get too carried away drawing bent pipes, sort out who or how you are going to bend them. Also sort out a source of your chosen pipe sizes.

That centre bulkhead with the roll hoops could do with some cross bracing

Cheers

thanks, busy at the moment putting in more crossbracing.

I have found a small company that said its possible to bend these radii. I gave him a rough idea of the radii sizes. he said its quite cheap as well

Fred W B, Do you have lots of automotive resources there in P E, seeing that its SA's car capital?

Hi Gakes

I do know a few people, but the OE stuff is not really relevant to what we are doing. You can get general engineering, machining, plating etc done quite easily at various places for reasonable money, but the trick is to spread it around so that you don't P people off with always pestering them with no volume fiddly stuff.

The "holy grail" would be Jimmy Price's Hi Tech Automotive (Cobras, Daytona Coupes, GT40's) but he has a policy of not selling bits to the local market. I do know him and have seen his plant but don't want to make a nuisance of myself.

Cheers

Fred W B

Out of interest, what sort of accuracy did they say they could achieve?

Gakes - 13/4/08 at 07:30 PM

The guy said he can make the exact same curves repeatedly. All I can do is trust him. I hope it goes well. I will give an update in the week of the progress on the bending.

im looking for a 3d or 2d model of any 4cyl vw engine and FWD gbox. Can anyone help me out?

heres another update: Rescued attachment chassis design14.jpg

added more reinforcement and front suspension:

I'm sure I see a few design cues from R4 in there somewhere!

Gakes - 4/5/08 at 01:53 PM

maybe, but im sure I saw some of those cues come from ummmm......the ATOM

Ive been sick for a while, and took some time off and went on holiday, so I neva had time to post. but heres a few updates, would like some reviews:
