Hi all

I intend mounting an oil cooler in my Velocity/Zetec, and don't appear to have enough room infront of the radiator to mount the cooler rad.

I am considering mounting it in the space behind the radiator and in front of the engine, as high as possible at an angle of about 45 degrees, and then cut venting in the nose cone to allow cool air to the cooler. (To assist in getting heat out of the engine bay I have cut vents into the bonnet just forward of the bulkhead).

Will I have problems mounting it at about rocker cover level, with drain down or circulation problems?

I would really appreciate your ideas on where to mount it etc. carefull with the obscenities

Mounted mine behind the rad but low down for a couple of reasons
1 more space
2 easier to plumb in .
had to make a small bracket to mount it to the chassis and got a hydraulics engineer to make up the hoses to suit

I mounted my oil cooler below the radiator. Re-located the numberplate, and drilled a few holes in the nose cone.

It works great and reduced oil temps significantly.

I'd be wary of locating it in the engine bay itself. Hot air rising from the rad could be a problem.

Low down, in high pressure air flow would be the way I'd go.

I mounted an oil cooler on a landrover I raced horizontally, on the floor behind the rad.

Cut a hole to allow air in (lots of ali to stop water coming in ands drowning the engine) but made a retained flap to protect it when fording through water.

This is common for off road racing, no need for the flap on a 7.

I have two oil coolers on my car. One for the Rotrex traction fluid which is a Mocal oil cooler mounted behind the radiator.

My other is a Ford diesel oil/water heat echanger bought off Ebay for about £10. I've no screen so I've used the heater circuit to to feed water to the copper cooling block.

Works very well and additionally pre-heats the oil as the water temp rises.

I used an Oil Cooler that came from a Rover (can't remember which one, possibly a 200 or 400) which i have fiteed to sit above my rad.

No problems with oil draining etc and oil pressure is good
