I have noticed that lately there has been some confusion about what will be happening around the changeover date.

I've just received a Newsletter from VOSA this morning. It states the following...

IVA becomes mandatory on 29th April 2009.

SVA applications will not be accepted after 28th February 2009 ("..this will allow applications which are received up to and including 28th Feb 2009 to be processd and these vehicles examined by 28th April 2009..."

It is also clear that if a car is not inspected for SVA before 29th April 2009 it will then proceed by way of IVA.

If a car undergoes SVA before 29th April but fails then that vehicle "will be allowed up to 6 months in which to be re-presented for a re-examination as provided for in current regulations"

This seems to suggest that a retest in these circs will be under SVA regs and not IVA.

Hope this clears up any confusion

So you could apply for SVA in February, get a date in April for a first test on a half built pile of parts, fail (obviously) and have 6 months to finish the build and apply for a "re" test?

I heard much the same when i called my local branch. The lady said as long as its booked in by end of Feb it will be checked under SVA guidlines although she didnt mention it would have to be tested still before April 29th which if everyones doing the same thing aiming to book in, in feb it could get difficult. The 6 month rule is pretty good so as long as i can move mine it will be going in even if it isnt finished.

does anybody know what the cost is?
SVA=
IVA=

SVA is £200 ish
IVA is £500+

That's what I'm doing now. The cars all but finished but TBH I don't know where to say stop so I'm going to fire it in for the test let them tell me and know I've beaten the IVA. Though I must say I'm cacking it looking at some of the cars on here. Especially Fozzies in that mag

What would an acceptable car look alike? Can it be a little rusty, non matching colour parts, What would an examiner say if you went there with a sort of old banger?

why on earth does the IVA cost more than SVA?

surely no special equipment is needed to test a reversing mechanism and a horn?

im beginning to get the impression amateur built cars and 'cottage industries' aren't welcome in this country any more. great shame.

Here, here! Think it's the same group of 'advisors' that decided diesel would cost much more than petrol to produce (even though it was always cheaper and takes less to do so! Nothing to do with popularity of diesels of course )

Just like this hike in cost is nothing to do with the unprecedented popularity of kit-cars either

If you fail the "SVA" and have to have a retest within 6 months ...

a Does it cost for a retest ?
b If so How much
c What hapens if it fails the retest, another ??

Do bear in mind the examiner can just refuse to test the car if you turn up with it half finished.

The car must be driveable and a good attempt made to make it roadworthy.

I bet you if you turn up with a car which is a blatent fail you will be asked politely to go away and told to rebook for an IVA.

SVA retests are £38 (£190 for the full test).
You can have more than one retest - just so long as you pay £38 each time.

IVA test fee hasn't been set yet altough figures of £499 and £520 have beeen bandied around. Proportionatly that would make an IVA retest approx £100 each time!

I suspect as you haven't actually taken a test then you cannot have a retest & would forfeit the fee & have to pay for & take a IVA.
