Rear number plate size

From what I can see the standard size for a squarish rear plate is 280 x 203 I have ordered a backing plate. This would fit between the exhausts (300mm apart) yet checking the IVA manual the width of the plate has to be min 340mm........why???
This means I will have to have a long one mounted underneath. It cant just dangle or it will fail, therefore I now have to make up a support structure with holes in the bodywork

Squarish rear plates are for imports only

Sure I've seen them on some UK spec 4x4s??

Sometimes, manufacturers only provide space for square number paltes on 4X4 as it is less likely to brake them.

Most of the times, It is the owner that does this and is illegal.

you can have a square one, i do and the cops have never mentioned it. as long as the lettering is the right size.

with regard to number plates on kitcars if you trawl through all of the dvla info on it you find that

if the car does not have a european certificate you can have import plates on the car with the import font
and mr plod cant do anything about it

Would that be though after IVA?
I mean that you can change it after IVA but to go through IVA you need normal ones?

As I cant physically fit the squarish on I will have to usea normal one. However, my funky surround turned up today and that will be going on after the test.

I didn't think you needed number plates for IVA as the test was to deem if the vehicle is roadworthy, then upon completion you go to the DVLA with MAC certificate to register the vehicle and assign it a registration mark....

I have a square -ish rear plate with no problems...I am sure there is reference to it either on DVLA or direct.gov site....somewhere!...

You don't need a reg plate but you do have to show a mounting plate or space for one to be fitted. Most 7's dont have a problem as you have generally a flat back unlike mine
