Re recent issue Complete Kit Car mag, in which there is reported the IVA test results for an amateur-built Haynes Roadster.

The builder (Ashley Gardiner) reported
(i) that the backstays of his roll-over bar would have to be welded on to the chassis, or that there would have to be 2 bolts fastening per stay;

(ii) that the upper seat belt plates had to have permanent covers, to achieve the requisite 2.5mm rad.

Was this purely an individual tester's opinion, or is it now a general IVA requirement?

Permanent covers? Sounds odd, oems dont have them as you may be required to change them.. after a crash surely?

I think they mean a plastic piece that clips over the metal triangle. Permanent rather than a bit of tape or edging trim?

I'm sure ashg will be along soon to confirm

No idea about the rollcage as it's not required to have one so they shouldn't be in the test beyond exterior projections.

I think the point in Ash's case was that the harnesses were mounted on the rollbar, and so it formed part of the structure attaching the harnesses, which in turn meant that the tester could fail it if he thought it was inadequately attached to the chassis.

I'm sure permanent just meant that you had to use a tool to remove. Pipe lagging on wishbones wasn't permanent but cable tied on then it was as you had to cut the ties off first.

That was SVA though.

Hi That was my article. the back stays formed part of the seatbelt mounting structure which is why they needed two bolts.

they wanted to see plastic covers over the seatbelt fixings lik you would see on a production car. i will post up some pictures of what i did to get round it when i get home tonight.

I had to fit some trim to my upper belt mounting plates for SVA. Tester "advised" it would need to be glued on rather than pushed on so I superglued some rubber U trim round the triangle plate and tucked the ends inside the loop of the actual harness - pretty neat and tidy and a straight pass on the retest.

This was SVA, not IVA.

Thats how i understand it. Infact, i have just modified my roll bar to include back stays and is bolted on by 2 bolts for each back stay and 3 bolt either side of the main bar!

The back stays with one bolt was not a fail on my IVA at Manchester.

They are fasyened on the main roll bar with 8 off M8 (4 each side) and the back stays have two (one each) M10.

All are 8.8 spec and would need several tonnes of force to shear them. I think the tester was having one!

Tell me about it ....
I was there during Ash's test
The tester seemed to think in the case of an accident
the seatbelts would bend the roll bar and pull out the back stays..

come off a 1989 micra the old box shape ones.

Many thanks for all this very interesting feedback, especially from those who have experienced IVA test.

My existing crossbar is made from 25mm RHS tube, with welded inserts for belt anchorages.

I'm thinking about welding some angle section to the crossbar, to increase for/aft rigidity.

Roll-over hoop is attached by 4 x M8 bolts to chassis, backstays by M10 bolts.
