How much of a donor do you need to use for you to use the reg?

You need two major components, ie Engine, Transmission, Axles(both), Steering Assy, Suspension. Plus the donor V5 to get an age related plate (note this is not the same number as the donor, you just get the same prefix)

azrael,each major component has a value of 1,you need x amount of points to get an age related plate,less than x you get a Q plate,that means date of manafacture is unknown,it wont really matter to you as i spose you will have to re-register yr car when you get it home.
to make matters worse each area seems to make the rules up as they go along so advice/procedure given in london may be different to that in yorkshire etc.

According to the DVLA leaflet (inf26) you need any two of the bits listed plus a new monocoque. Thats what they applied to me and I got an age related plate using a bike engine ( I claimed steering, axles, and transmission)
V5 is the registration doc.

ninja,i used everything bar the gearbox and front uprights from an escort,still got a Q plate tho

I think you are spot on with the inconsistancy bit John, although when I met the DVLA bloke he explained in detail (mainly for the trainee he had with him) why I was getting a age related plate and refered to their leaflet inf26 which reads.
" If a new monocoque bodyshell or chassis from a specialist kit manufacturer is used together with two major components from a donor vehicle, an age related mark will be assigned. The mark will be based on the age of the donor vehicle . An SVA certificate will be required to register the vehicle.
Where there are insufficient parts from the donor vehicle or in cases where the registration mark is unknown, an SVA certificate will be required to register the vehicle and a "Q" prefix registration number will be allocated"

What will it say on the paperwork if I get a Q-plate??
Will it say year of manuf. 2004
Or will it say YoM ??

And what about the emission tests etc..?

The year of manufacture will be the year you finish the build not the year of the donor.

Your emissions at the SVA are conducted as to the age of the engine NOT the donor vehicle unless you are useing the donor engine. You need proof of age if you claim it does not need to comply with current legislation

At MOTs the emissions are based on the registration plate.
