Hi
i am about to buy a kitcar,
the seller says it is registered as a
1972 Ford MK1 Mexico ( it is escort based)
Is this legal, how do i know its properly registered ?
i seen adverts saying properly registered as correct model
does this mean most people running old kit cars are using the donor V5
Thanks
mikey
ooooo er, think its time to walk away or negoiate major discount, what kit is it BTW ?
if its been built a while it aint been properly registered.
if its been built recentley it aint been thru the SVA.
sorry to bear bad news but its gotta be real cheap or walk away.
by real cheap i mean cheap enough to spend whats req'd to get it SVA'd and legal for the original asking price.

hi
its a dutton melos
1600xf
whats it worth ?
Sorry but walk away as Jon sayes
Jacko
yep, next to nothing is the value. IMHO
The irony is back at the time of the rule changes that came with the SVA the DVLA were quite co-operative about sorting out mis-registered kit cars
without too much hassle but this far down the line I suspect that situation has changed a bit.
Of course at one time it might have actually been registered as a Dutton and the Dutton documents swapped to avoid SVA on a new build -- either way
it spells hassle.
Just suppose i buy it and run it
as this guy has.
Except when i get pulled by the police
nobody knows what it is registered as
The MOT man does not know
The Tax people do not know
so when i get caught by the police
what crime have i committed ( the car is not stolen)
and what penalties have been dished out
Has anybody been caught doing this ?
or (god forbid) you have an accident in it.......??
i would give 2 bits of advice....
1) leave it alone.
2) Buy it for peanuts and make it legal.
The problem is what do you insure it as?.Also remeber that now the police can follow you and do an id check,if it comes back to them as an escort they
may be a bit akward.
Its only really any good for parts, engine ,box prop and axle

crimes could include not complying with the laws regarding number plates and invalid insurance. You will have trouble MOTing it soon, ISTR that there is a computer system coming out that will catch out vehicles like this. hence no tax too.
Nothing definite then !
how come most beach buggies
are registered as beetle convertables
beetles are different as they can be registered as rebodies because they keep the original chassis.
Ned.
If you'd rather have a beach buggy, I'll sell you one in bits!!
Marcus
no thanks
i think i will stick to this kit car
negotiate a big discount
and run it on the escort log book
i know its wrong
but its not the crime of the century
So what happens when you have an accident and hurt/kill someone and your insurance is invalid. What then? You couldn't raise enough money to pay
the compensation. I think that you'll be spending time at Her Majesty's pleasure.
Be sensible, don't do it. Personally if you do buy it and run it I hope that someone dobs you in.
Cheers
Michael
Mikey, a very selfish attitude.
The vast majority of people building kits keep within the law and regulations although it may seem a big pain in the a**e at times. People like you
are potentially going to make it even more difficult in the future, and who knows may even put a stop to kit buildng althogther.
Eric
IMO i think its been brought already?
OK
Apart from the insurance issues
can anybody tell me what the penalties are for doing this ?
Has anyone got the balls to admit to
running a kit on a suspect log book

'I think you're on the wrong site.
You need www.sportspowerdrive.co.uk '
Ouch!!!
Why do we insure cars at all, if that's your attitude. It's not for the drivers benefit, it's the poor buggers you hit!!
Marcus
OOOhh!
The best of it is the mexico log book is probably worth a few bob.
If you own a house or have a family please dont run this as it is!
You would in the event of an accident loose the lot!
It is not just a petty crime, it's reckless!
are you sugesting i sell
my tax exempt mexico log book
isnt that illegal !!!!
mabe i should just swap it for
a tax exempt
dutton log book
You could always put it through SVA
Have a look HERE for one persons experience with an incorrectly registered kit car.
bloke brought it on himself
he wasnt caught
no mention of invalid insurance in article
and hes supposed to be a pillar of society
You don't get tax exemption on a kit car if it's been registered correctly as tax exemption only applies if the car has the original chassis
(or something like that).
I read that somewhere but I'm damned if I can find it atm.
I've worked within the insurance industry for the last 10 years... I can promise you that if you were to have an accident in it and it is not
register correctly the chances of the insurance company paying out are practically zero... as a result you would have to pay out on any repairs and
any legal fees.
this is quite apart from fines etc for driving a car that's not properly registered on the road.
look you are all missing the point
FORGET the insurance stuff
what happens when i get pulled by the police
They will ask to see documents as usual. Any copper will know that a 7-style car is not an escort. They will probably impound the car. Dunno where
they would take it from there. I would imagine the penalties are he same as for a ringed car (confiscated and destroyed?)...though I'm not
sure.
David
You get a fine and points for no insurance, running a vehicle on false plates is jailable and they can hit you for back duty for avoiding road tax. Ignorance is no excuse in the eyes of the law so you can't say you didn't know it wasn't an Escort Mexico. The four year amnesty is up, why do you think he's getting rid of the car?

bloke brought it on himself
i also think you cant do it.
do you have kids? imagine you hurt a child of some one driving a non correct secured car(insuranced??) no one would pardon that!
i think you could only buy it to repas the SVA as simple as that. or find out and do it legal.
Making cars is not a game!its a real danger dad you do and not only for you, when you have your plates etc also for others. a simple mufler that falls
down on the highway can cause a llot of chit and that's only one thing.
the second point is how relax can you drive when you know that you are getting it hot if you see police?? what about wrong parking(and they
discoverr..)
or speeding..?? today with the networks etc. its only one time that they need to see a plate and do several test on it.
cheers,
TKS
i'm only 21years if you thought in case you thought i had more..
interesting timing on this question being asked ............. or is my paranoia coming on again
love and kisses Woodster (ALLEGEDLY)
makes himself a member ,asks one question , doesn't ask who sportspowerdrive are then he's gone ........ very odd
who are sportspowerdrive
Just do a search (for SPD or sports power drive)...and all will become clear (ish)

IF it were to happen to you Mikey how would it feel?
Hit by an uninsured driver.
Your injuries don't receive the best treatment possible as he's unable to pay.
What if it was your Wife/GF/Child who got hit? eternity in a wheelchair because spinal injuries went untreated for too long due to an over-stressed
NHS.. when his Insurance could have paid for top-of-the-line re-hab?
It's happened to someone I know, A nova with a 2 ltr lump in it hit her car. Nasty-ass injuries, and no insurance payout as the lad had thought
"the police won't catch me, so it's OK" She still has trouble walking (2 years later)
One persons stupidity and selfishness has knock-on effects for others.
Personaly, I hope that you don't HAVE a wife/child GF... simply because people with your complete lack of regard for others and blatant idiocy
shouldn't be allowed to pollute the gene-pool.
Harsh I know... but WHY ask a question when you have absoloutly no interest in listening to the answers?
It's idiotic.
Re: your comments about the Cobra-guy "That guy is suposed to be the pillar of society".... yes. And he was doing a goob job of it too!!
Since when did 'following legal channels to ensure the safety of others' Stop someone from being respected?? Surely you want a Nova 1.3SR
.. not a Kit car?
