Is there any requirement to have a tacho for SVA? The only reason i can think of is when they test the sound level and they ask you to go to 6,500 rpm (or whatever) but if you have no tacho then how will they know where to take the db level from?
one of the first things he did on my test was to check the accuracy of my tacho.
he did thes with some gizmo stuck on the rocker cover?
guess if you aint got one or it dont read right he would use the same toy

It's the first thing Michael did on mine at Mitcham aswell, I asked what it was and he said it tests the tacho is correct so he knows that he is
testing the revs right.
I seem to remember it was a clip on the HT leads.

so will i need to fit a tacho for sva? i'm thinking of not bothering....
had a quick look through my sva manual and the only thing according to that is a speedo and the warning lights.
and i am sure that some cars do not come with a tacho so why should you.

My auto electrical meter provides a tachometer setting connected to the coil, it also does dwell from the same connection. It was a cheapish one
bought from Halfrauds and has been in valuable.

I guess they will put their meter on my car when doing the noise test and tell me when to stop revving up.

Andy, if you're worried regd noise level then apparently as you are the designer of the car you state at what revs your engine is designed to give full power. When I applied for the sva I stated max power revs of 5750 so at sva they will estimate 75% of that. Although my tacho shows 11,500 as red line I will argue I didn't design the car for those kind of revs therefore should pass noise level easily!! By the way haven't had sva yet so heres hoping but been reliably informed it should!!
They will tell you what they are testing it at. They are not idiots and know what revs you will be using. They tested my pinto at 4,000rpm which is roughly 2/3 of the maximum safe rev range. You may have designed the car but you didn't design the engine.
Well I'm going to give it a try anyway Pete as I know of people who have done this. If I were the tester I know that I am taking the p-- s but if there is a shortcut I will go for it!! Plus I know that my exhaust will not pass the noise test so will have to give it a try. By the way did you state the max power revs on your sva application?
I put it at 5,000rpm for the same reason you did. It passed at 98db anyway but I was doubtful as it sounded loud.
I think you would be hard pushed to get a std pinto with MK exhaust over the db limit at SVA. My last Sva was 94db i think.
It was a home made silencer before MK were doing stuff like that. It was before MK opened at Langold and Martin was still doing Locost chassis from home.
|I'm in agreement with snoopy, talk on the Tiger forum suggests that most people say max power is about 4,500 rpm on their pinto's.....although this is untrue and the inspectors probably know it theres no way then can make you rev it more cos you've told them that its unsafe to do so....they wouldn't be aloud to risk an engine going bang! At my SVA he tested the tacho for accuracy so he could use it for the noise test. If it is not correct they will use their own.
Mine tested to within 100 RPM at 4000 so he used that.
I used the max power figure for the pinto from the haynes manual @ 5200 rpm and he tested the noise at 3900 rpm.
As has already been said the guys are not stupid so dont lie.
