Been reading the SVA manual.......

Seems if you use ali panelling for the body the edges must be turned back over the chassis tubes by 180 degrees so that they offer no sharp edges.

Mine has been rivetted to the outside of the chassis tube.

Can anyone confirm this is an SVA fail and therefore I'll need to redo my bodywork!

where your 2 side panels join is the problem area(imho)so glue some plastic strip over the join or fill the edge with some sort of sealer

Strange - I read that article as making life easier for the builder, by clarifying some ambiguous rules.

Where your panels are rivetted on at the sides the top of the rail is covered by your scuttle, bonnet and nose, the only bit will be in the cockpit. Get some 1" wide alloy capping in a rounded profile from B&Q and put it on top of the rails with panel adhesive or rivets and it will cover the edge in question.

but... surely the same applies to the bottom edges of the panels too not just the tops.

Bit trickier to cover the bottom edges where there is no GRP to hide the edges behind.

Clarification is good but not after you've done a particular part of u r build!

i'm building an MK Indy. I've covered just underneath the diff onto just below the tank with ali and not foldered the two sides by the suspension bits, will these cause a problem?

Mine are rivetted to the sites at the bottom and they passed. If you look under most cars there is a seam where the sill joins to the floor which would class as a sharp edge so they must exempt the floor. Take the edge off with a file or some 80 grit production paper, should be o.k.

budget idea

buy some 'hocky stick' wood moulding from B&Q paint it and fix it with carpit tape for the sva then take it off afterwards

Blushift, yes the MM cheapo one but the quality is pretty poor. It was a bastard to assemble.


But it does a job and makes engine and box fitting a one man job - at least with an X/F.
