I made a visit to my local (and very helpful) DVLA offices today with the view to obtaining a form to apply for a chassis number. I was pleasantly
surprised when they were happy to issue me with one while I waited.
Question.
Is it acceptable to stamp this number on an aluminium plate and rivet this plate onto the chassis in the engine bay which is easily viewable?
Cheers,
The Baron
Yes, but it also needs to be stamped into the chassis somewhere else.
Needs to be in at least 2 places on the car, one of which must be on a permanent part of the chassis.
David
I etched mine in, The stamps were denting the chassis.
Steve.
Yes
And AFAIK no requirement to be stamped anywhere else.
I was told by (chester) DVLA that it also had to be stamped in a second (more) permanent place on the car.
Like Flak said above, but I didn't fancy doing it on the chassis rails anywhere as above, so I asked him if it was OK to stamp it on the ALI
floor (which is removable in the same manner as the ALI plate would be!! altough it would take a bit longer obviously!) and he said ok.
When I stamped the floor, I placed a piece of hard wood on a jack underneath the floor so as to stamp cleanly rather than just denting it.

At the time "my" DVLA man inspected the car, I had already had my chassis number accepted by DVLA and he was happy that "at that time" the single rivetted plate was enough. I don't recall being instructed that it should be anywhere specifically, though I think the manual states offside? and easily visible?
As is normal, one rule for one local office, one for another.
Sounds like its worth checking with your local Baron.
I must add that I think it's sensible to have it in more than one place, as I mentioned "at the time" I only had it on the plate, I now have it in more than one
Flak monkey, name the web site you got your latest pic from will ya?
When I got the date through for my SVA and I was chatting with Mr SVA about the chassis number and he said that I was best to stamp it on a plate a
rivet it to the chassis as if you try to stamp it on the tubular frame it will collapse and make it virtually illegible.
I also asked where the best place to put it was and he said anywhere where it is visible. He mentioned some manufaturers actually mount it on the back
of the fiberglass scuttle!
I'll take my stamps with me on Tuesday incase just the plate isn't enough and let you know when I return!
