I am still in the early stages of manufacture, but I am worried I wont get any insurance when I finish the car.
In fact I am pretty sure of it
My bec will be an Indyblade
I am 18
You might see my problem, the only good thing is that I have one year's no claims bonus.
Has anybody heard of anybody getting quotes for someone like me? And if there are any companies willing to sell insurance for under 25s?
Thanks for any help
James
Id be VERY interested to read replies, being 22 with zero no claims because of having to claim for a fire
You could try a U2U to Tom Windmill on here. He built An Indy Fazer but sold it because of the insurance problem. I don't think he had any no claims though because he had only recently passed his test.
You will get get insurance but it might cost you. I phoned around the Insurers that advertise in the Kit Car mags as my son will be 17 in July. Most
will only insure you from 18 on. Its worth shopping around. You will need to phone them to get a quote. Just to let you know i have a 1991 Peugeot 205
1.1 that my son will get when he is 17 and i asked my insurance company how much it would be for him to insure it. The reply £3,000 was a bit of a
shock. Will need to change my insurance company now as i got a quote of £600 elsewhere. Good luck. Let us know how you get on.
Cheers Ronnie

footman james would be your best bet, it was impossible for me to get any other company to insure me before i was 21. it seems now i am 21, other
companies are startring to cover younger drivers, but not many.
don't worry about no claims, it doesn't count on most kit policies.
bike engine? under 21? i think you'll be lucky or paying thousands. i'm willing to be proven wrong though.
for a 1.6 pinto indy, 1500 miles p/a, my premiums have gone:
19 - £827 - £600 excess
20 - £550 - £350 excess
21 - £350 - £250excess - it's actually £400, but that's cos i've added legal cover and breakdown.
don't get me started on tin top insurance!

James,
Theres a lot of factors with insurance and they way the comapnies work it theyve got us by the balls. Just as a thought... if you crash your car in
the first year of driving, "statistically" your less likely to for the rest of your life on the road... But do insurers see it like that?
A friend of mine who was 21 at the time could insure his tiger for £100 less than what is peug 306 was insured for. I think some companies base it on
the principle that not many people would want to destroy their pride and joy self build car.
Lower insurance for young people;
-Limited milage knocks it down alot.
-I know its a micky mouse course but some companies do offer discounts for pass plus.
- If youve got the time to do it, I'd recomend ROSPAs advanced course Im doing mine next year.
- Now this next bit might sound a little weird but in some cases your car insurance will go down if you add a named driver with full no claims to your
insurance. I'm 19, 3yrs no claims and for my corsa SRI full comp, business use, with pass plus, milage of about 15k pa ins would be £600 pa...
now I added my mum whos 45 with 25 years no claims... it knocked my insurance down to £525.
In my corner ive got 3 years no claims, and started out with an annual premium of £1300 tripple the price of my first motor!
Hope this helps! and let me know if you find a decent company to use as my car should be finished early next year
Nathan
Hi, get a quote and then go on elephant.co.uk - thats what ive been doing for the last few years and they always seem to beat the quotes ive been
given elsewhere. Also, you can get a policy where you get a year's no claims after just ten months. No idea what they'll be like for kit
cars though.
You can do the 'pass-plus' course but you have to do this within 12months of passing i believe.
Good luck!

I would have to agree with you 02GF74, i believe the saying is true that you learn the most in the months after your test than what you do in your
lessons. And if i were to quantify risk, the young would have to pay. But what about the women though? how can they have low premiums when it is
common knowledge that they are the worst drivers?
In some ways I think the current driving test is enough to produce a competant driver. 3 times Ive had a car written off by some 17 year old whos just
passed their test and thought they were collin mcrae.
As for that ginger comment;

When I had an Impreza turbo, I got a quote for £1200 (aged 25, 4 years NCB). Putting my g/f on the policy, despite the fact she had written a car off
3 months earlier (drove off the road into a ditch for no reason!) bought my insurance down by £200!
They will sting you, becuase you are likely to be in a crash. Nearly everyone crashes in the first 3 years after passing.
As for the comment about women drivers, I think that is a little unfair. I appreciate only too well they can be real muppets behind the wheel (see
above!), but you don't like the idea of all young people being classed as bad drivers, so why is it acceptable to say that for women.
Statistically, they are better drivers (they tend to have more small scrapes, blokes tend to go out in a firey inferno!).

yes, yes, I know I, know, statistically they are far superior, just the over used joke etc only pulling your leg
I apologise profusely if I have offended any of you feminists out there.
Thanks everyone
This putting another driver on with no claims seems like it could turn out to be quite good - my dad has never had a claim on his car insurance
throughout his whole driving life, (i.e. a lot of years no claims bonus!)
After my exams I will start ringing round all the companies you suggested
I'm not too hopeful, but its good to know that I'm not the only one in this situation!
I am hoping to finish the bec before the end of my summer holiday, as I go to uni (hopefully imperial college to do mechanical engineering) in
september/october, as I know I wont get it finished during my course!
Perhaps at the end of my degree I might be able to get cheaper insurance though
Thanks,
James
I dont know if they insure kit cars, but I got a good deal with Admiral - been with them for 3 years now, they have always been the cheapest, and now I have 2 cars they did me a deal on a multi-car policy. Mind you both mine are factory standard cars, and they did ask if my Nissan was an import so perhaps they dont do specialist cars. Could be worth a try though.
I'm 19 with zero no claims as i've always been on my dads policy, I found that only a few companies will insure under 21's or 23's. Adrian flux is one of them, giving me a quote for £1400 on a highly tuned 1.7 (bored out) crossflow powered Sylva striker. Although I also found a company called Graham Sykes who I think I will go with when its finished soon as they quoted me about £600. hope this helps as I spent hours on the phone! Alex.
I am trying to get a decent quote for myself, my missus and son who is 20. So far Adrian Flux, Glynwood, Backford Bloor and Sureterm have all said
they don't cover anyone under 21. Elephant quoted £1051.
Try MSM Insurance who quoted me £567.30 inc road assistance or Graham Sykes who quoted around £340 and the cheapest so far (but did they mean it
?!).
I'll try and remember to post who I have gone with when I get fixed up.
SVA confirmation returned today ....
