Cyclewings and covering wheels

Hi All

Just thinking about booking my SVA re-test and one thing he pulled me up on was my front cyclewings.

As my viento is running 205 wide 17" wheels and the rim sticks out about 20mm further than the tyre I need to pull the cyclewing out to cover the rim as it is "out of bodyplan". THis will then mean that there will be about 5-10mm of tyre poking out the inside of the cyclewing... Does anyone know if that would be acceptable or do I need to find some skinnier wheels for the re-test?

The front has to cover the rim when viewing from above, the rear has to go at least as far down as the centre of the wheel, so looking at you avatar get borrowing !

The main problem we had is with the width. If we move it out to cover the wheels (the spokes stick out about 25mm from tyre edge) then the inside edge of the tyre is not covered by the wing.

Not exactly true, the front of the arch needs to be beyond the front of the rim. It doesnt need to come down past the centre of the wheel at the back though, infact theres no rules covering how far it comes around the back of the wheel/tyre.

Width wise the wing needs to cover the full width of the tyre on both sides.

But Mark's WHEELS stick out past the width of his tyres, I think the SVA fail said the wings needed to cover the wheel too, but this would mean the wing not covering the inner face of the tyre. Or do we only need to set it to cover the TYRE???

can't you glue a flap of rubber or something to the side of the arch to extend it? So in plan view you would no longer see wheel or tyre.

Borrow some narrower front wheels for the test or widen the wing. If they're too narrow they are not going to cover wherever you manoeuvre them to.

This was picked up on on my SVA, and I'd fitted at the last minute some wider wings because I was suspect about the narrower ones failing.

Bacause I had a slight bit of negative chamber it meant that that lower down the wheel the alloy spoke protruded furter out than the arch, suffice to say I will be straightening my wheels.

That was a good point about the camber!

I have now stood the wheel directly upright and found that the rim sticks outside of the tyre by about 15mm at its widest, and the cyclewing is only 8" wide so it only just covers the tyre...

Steve and I have been discussing this tonight and the conclusion for the easiest/safest fix it to widen the cyclewings by about an inch so that'll be another new skill I try to learn tomorrow night

Tyres are not mentioned in the manual (as far as this scenario goes anyway!) - only wheels...

I did consider moving the cyclewings over to cover the wheel, but I don't think my nervespatience could stretch to another fail... Not worth the gamble!

The bonus of widening the cyclewings is we can fill the holes where they were originally bolted making it look tidier (with any luck!)
