Fog Light position

Chaps

Having a debate with meself about where to put the foglight (only have one).

IIRC SVA book says centrally or to offside, but not how far forward it can be - yeah I know common sense dictates that I can't mount it on the scuttle, that'd be silly

I was thinking about centrally on tube "o" (top tube behind seats) or thereabouts, or when I eventually get a roll bar, hang it under that (subject of course to SVA max height limit).

Don't want to put it on rear panel, coz it doesn't look very nice IMHO.

Cheers

Thats something I wondered about when I fitted mine recently.

My car, having a morgan sloped style back, has the fog lamp approx 200mm inboard of the rear, mounted on top of the rear bumper (nothing like building a simple car is there).

So , its not at the extreme rear, then neither are the indicator and rear position lights, also being on the sloped rear.

I recon this is gonna come down to individual examiners opinion of what is right. Even in an MOT the tester can fail the car on summat he thinks isnt safe, but isnt actually a test point.

So, if you cant show an example (or have seen an example) of mounting a light that far forward, I suggest you may be breaking new ground and might fail....

I can point to production morgans re my light positions.

One ot the TVR range seems to have its indicators very high, - its a while since I saw one - seemingly in the top of the roll bar.....so that kinda fits your ideas.

Steve,

I think I'll go for it. If examiner dislikes, it won't be too big a job to reposition!

I don't believe it will be a problem, so long as it's within SVA height etc guidelines - probably fail it on the grounds that it interferes with rear view mirror!

Wouldn't mind sticking my reverse lights up on the roll bar too - would keep rear panel clear (too clear?).

yep - it might look quite good.

There are also a lot of saloon cars with 3rd brake lights in the rear window - almost 3 feet in from the rear I would guess..

acording to they who must be obeyed the light must be between 250 min height and 1000 max height,i spose this means the bottom edge is min 250 from floor and the top edge 1000 from floor

Conrod,

Haven't a roll bar fitted yet, so did a bit of measuring last light (just spotted your post).

It looks like roll bar would have to be quite low (15", or have a cross piece.

Think I'm gonna do it

just measured my roll bar(mk indy)you could do it if you drop the light about 4"from the roll bar, could double up as a high level brake light?

Does the fog light lens have to be vertical ? By that, I mean can I put it into the sloping rear tub and make it a flush fit - that means it'll be pointing up by about 15 degrees ?

Thanks, Steve

It's supposed to be vertical. If you fix it to the panel you could pack behind the top of the light unit to make the lens vertical, then take the packing out later to tidy it up. .

yours, Pete.

Also, was browsing the SVA manual over the w/end, and I'm sure (but may be mistaken) that the fog has to show 5 deg down - which would be in the "boot"

So it'll need raising slightly, or hanging from roll bar.
