How do I go about applying for a chassis no. Ive been told I need this on the car before its SVA (a little while away admitadly). I really cant be
bothered sitting down trying to make up a vin number to be told its not right. Do I have a lot of paperwork to fill in?
Cheers.
You can ask the local DVLA office. They'll often quite happily make one up.
Otherwise the usual format involves
manafacturer code : model code : date of build
It should be 17 digits and some characteres are not allowed. Not sure what though!! I've got both 0 and O on mine which I would have thought are
the main ones prone to causing confusion...
I was tempted to include the word Caterham in the middle of the VIN just to annoy Caterham's layers.....
Speed of reply always amazes me on this site. Great, cheers.
Funny, it is the repetition that amazes me!
Seriously, this has been asked twice in the last 7 days.

PLEASE PLEASE BE PATIENT
As soon as I am able to scan the letter from the DVLA, there will be no need to keep asking this question and posting inaccurate information.
ARRGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AARRrrrrrgggggghhhhh!!!! Ug.
i just made one up 17 digits long, avoided the number 1 and put this on the Sva form. DVLA did not question it at all.
get the dvla involved and all the burocratic idiots come out to play with different advice each time you phone them.
ditch
You don't have to have 17 digits, Russ bost has 11 or 12.
Make your own then use an online hpi checker to see if the vin exists.
The chances that it does is slim.
Just think about the lotto and you will realise why!
