I need to disassemble the steering rack to put in my new quick rack.

How do i get the old steering gear rod out? Do i need to take out the steering column pinion first?

If thats correct, then how do i get that metal shroud off which holds the pinion in?

The quickrack is easy to fit in the shortened casing. Simply remove the slipper plug, then loosen and remove the pinion nut, together with the pinion. Slide the old rack out and the new quickrack in. Replace the pinion, tighten the pinion nut and then screw in the slipper plug. Don't screw the slipper up too tight though.

I made myself a tool which slots into the surround which holds the pinion down in its housing. It's a bit stiff at first as they are centre punched into place but once it's unscrewed the pinion just pulls out.

You can then pull the rack out and replace.

You might need to back off the adjuster to get the new one in but you should be able to see how it works by this point.

do you not have to cut the new rack inner down and tap the end before you fit it?

Ahh i see. Its the slipper plug which sounds like it would slip right out!

This has not been the case. So youre saying i need to manufacture a tool to unscrew the pinion nut, ok.
