golf handbrake cables
Miks15 - 28/3/10 at 12:10 PM

I need to get some handbrake cables, and since im using the VAG rear calipers, i thought id just get golf handbrake cables, and then make and adaptor to fit the other ends to my handbrake. Would they be too long? I dont mind if theyu take a big arc in the back to make them fit welk. I dont want to have to pay out for custom cables.

Also wheres the best place to buy them from, looking on ebay they all seem to be for drum brake models.

Cheers

Mikkel

I have Golf calipers and the Sierra cable fits perfectly. So I'd prob advise going that route TBH.

I'll try and dig out a pic...

I used polo caliper cables they are quite short. Should add iused golf calipers.

From my build info the vag part no was

AdamR, im not using a sierra handbrake lever, so i thought id get cables that would go with the calipers.

Thanks Omega, will look for that cheers

I'm not using a Sierra lever either. It doesn't matter too much what lever you use as you have to rework that bit anyway. The benefit of using the Sierra cable is that the outers are just the right length and fit perfectly in the two holes that most chassis' have cut in the rear bulkhead.

Here's my set-up:

I've still got a bit of work to do joining the cables to my fabricated balance bar thingy, as you can see.

Ahh right,

Well i built my chassis myself, so atm there is no holes or anything in the rear bulkhead, so should be able to make anything work really.

Thanks anyway

Thepolo ones have threaded ends and are easier IMHO to setup/adjust. I used a pulley arrangement which also means that two clicks on the handbrake would be equivalent to 4 normally if you see what I mean.
i'll find a piccy for you to let you see. My chassis was also home built

Adam, the vw calipers that I have attach the cable through an upside down 'U' type arrangement - the cable just had a nipple on the end. Have you just hooked the loop on the end on the sierra cable onto the upside down 'U' - can't quite see on the photo? Also, do you have any idea how long the sierra cables were?

Miks - I believe that there is an autojumble at newark soon - you might find some cables there - that's my plan anyway!

Cheers all, JC

Yep, cable ends hook nicely over the, um, hook/lever thingy as you describe. This works so naturally that it hadn't even occurred to me that the Golf cable ends might connect in a different way.

I don't have the length of the Sierra cable to hand, but the outers are the perfect length for my +4 chassis with de-dion. The inner cable is far too long, but that's fine as you have to chop the cable to poke it through the bulkhead anyway.
