replacement VW hubs?
contaminated - 12/5/11 at 08:48 AM

Do you think there might be a VW (or anything else for that matter) hub with a slightly wider diamater than a Golf hub, but that will still fit in a Golf upright?

As I posted the other day we've been trying to put right some wobbly front wheel studs on a Tiger Super Six. Last night we welded them up but noticed something that beggers belief frankly. The hubs are VW Golf, but have been re-drilled for a Ford PCD to match the rears. This is fine, except the holes that have been drilled are right on the edge of the upright. I kid you not there is less than 1mm of metal between the studs and the edge of the hub. In one case you can see it cracking!

Clearly we need to put this right - so the options are:

1. Get some replacement VW hubs and re-drill for a Ford PCD - same issue though, the holes will be too close to the edge of the hub
2. Try and fit an alternative and wider hub in the Golf uprights - and re-drill if necessary
3. Fit an alternative upright altogether - but the wishbones are specifically for a VW upright and would need to be replaced as well.

Any thoughts?

Dan

Get some replacement hubs, leave the pcd alone and get a set of alloys that are dual drilled 4x100 and 4x104?

That would seem like the sensible option!

custom made front hubs whould be the neat way to achive this, just not the cheap way

if you just want 4 wheels the same its probably easier to re-drill the rear hubs to suit the VW PCD

Mine has been done the other way around - I've left the fronts as 4 x 100 and redrilled the ford back end to suit, as there is loads of space on Ford rear hubs to redrill to 4 x 100.

Wheels are cheap and easily available from VWs, Vauxhalls and old BMWs in 4 x 100

Hopefully the redrilled hubs ARE hubcentric ? ie Correct flange for the intended wheels?
Nice feature to have the wheels adequately centralised on their hubs :-)
