Hi ! Im trying to work out how long a propshaft i need . I've seen stuff on here before but can't find much now it ! The distance from the diff flange to gearbox oil seal is 810mm . Its an escort 4 speed gearbox . So do i need to measure how far back into the gearbox the spines go , take off 25 mm for play and add that figure to my overall propshaft length ? Or does somebody on here have the correct measurements already ?
Do you have the flanges to hand? I was told by the prop shaft guy I'm going to use to mount the flanges and measure from the faces. Simples. But if you don't have them, then it will be alot harder unless you know the length of the flange you will be using
If you look at the sliding joint, you will probably see where the oil seal was contacting(shinier). work it out from there. I did this and it worked ok on my locost, 4 speed box and escort axle. The axle isnt going to move up and down very far anyway. Also other peoples measurement means you assume the engine is mounted in exactly the same place as yours.

Have you got the splined piece to go into the gearbox ?
When I got mine made, the supplier said "just tell me the distance between the back face of the gearbox extension and the flange of the
diff". That, plus the diameter of the Escort diff flange, got me a propshaft that's served me well for quite a number of years.

When you get that part you can measure like david has stated above as thats how i had mine done.
Picked this up on interweb.
When calculating length of prop-shaft leave 25mm of the splined section showing from the gearbox seal. From this point to the diff flange is known
as the working length. It is ideal to have at least 70mm of spline engaged.
Do exactly as David says. Measure the distance from the rear face of gearbox output to front face of diff input and tell your prop builder that
measurement as that is all they need. They will know what sliding joint distances etc will need to be allowed for.

Thanks for all the help .I was trying to buy a second hand propshaft but needed to know how to find the right length .I haven't been able to find one with right number of spines and right length anyhow .So getting one made from d & f and as many of you have pointed out they only needed the measurement from diff flange to gearbox oil seal. And only £105+vat ! Cheers.
