I'm about to replace the seal on my English (Timken) axle as all the oil is gone, along with chunks of gasket. Before I knock out the half shafts is the any gotchas etc I need to be aware of?

Just done same on locost , just make sure you knock new seal in with as large a dia socket or similar as seal is made from very light weight material & distorts easy
