Handbrake cables...
nre - 24/4/22 at 03:02 PM

Have an MOT booked this week with a view to getting to Stoneleigh next weekend, however have a seized (and now snapped...) handbrake cable on the Mojo. Any ideas where to get a replacement, and quickly?!

Rear calipers are sierra, outer is about 130cm, see pics at link below. Any hints or tips welcome!

That's a bit tricky - are there any markings anywhere on the cable you've got?
They look to be an oem cable, not a made up cable using universal fittings, i would guess possibly a mk1 focus or mk1/2 mondeo may be the original donor, or a mk5/6 escort rs2000/gti.

If you can't find the relevant dimensions online, a visit to a good motor factor may be in order, afaik those hook type caliper cable ends are only used by ford, so that should narrow down things a bit.

Thanks for the suggestions. The original cables came with the kit, no sign of any part numbers.

Have had a quick google for the matches you suggested but not found anything that looks right yet. Might try the motor factor route tomorrow!

One possibility is that it is an adapted cable.

My own car (Robin Hood) uses a Sierra cable for Sierra drums, but needs it to be shorter than standard. To adapt it simply required cutting down both the inner and outer of the cable, sliding a drilled and cut-off section of a bolt onto the end of the inner and dabbing the end with a welder, so as to form a replacement for the cut-off ferrule.

It's been on for 22-1/2 years now.

Try these guys:

Also have a look at the entries for 14/10/08 and 16/10/08 here:

Thanks, have ended up ordering some trailer brake cables, think there will be too much exposed inner but can hopefully fix this by adding a sleeve at the handbrake end to extend the outer a few inches to 'take up the slack' (the outer currently runs pretty straight for the first few inches so should hopefully work!)

My MK Indy was Sierra based so I got a Sierra handbrake cable and shortened (Indy much shorter than a Sierra) it by cutting the inner and clamping the ends together in a drilled bolt.

I ended up going down a different route to the trailer cables - JJ Cables Banbury made up a custom replacement which fitted perfectly, MOT passed this morning, Stoneleigh here I come
