Looks like it might've been used for some off-roading...

Lots of grit and muck in the bearings. Is it worth trying to clean it or should I scrap it, its not worth the hassle of replacing the bearings is it.

Very difficult to tell from a few photo's. I'd really like to see and touch something like this before saying it was a write off.

Has the diff' been outside for a long time? Is there some good reason why it's got dirty water inside? That last bit alone suggests it may not be worth fixing.

If I were you I would take it to a gearbox/transmission specialist and get their opinion.

If nothing else the crown wheel and pinion should be salvagable so don't simply bin it, the gear faces look in pretty good nick from the photos and you can wash them off with some engine cleaner etc.

In case he hasn't spotted this, I think Ned got his (Sierra) diff cleaned out by a company. I think they steamed eveything out!

If not why not get another from a scrappy for a few quid and leave that one in the corner of the garage.

Its not anything too special, a 3.92 push in, but I have been looking for quite a while!!

i put alloy bits in the dish washer!

Swill it out with parafin, dry it out with an airline, reassemble and fill with oil.

If it is no good you will find out when you drive it - they are easy enough to change, and all you will have wasted is a pint of parafin

It may be because when i got it it was covered in muck so i steamed it off quick to get teh outside a bit cleaner but there was some grit stuck to the grease by the holes were the shafts go in. So basically i probably blew it in with the pressure washer. If its turns out pooped i'll get your money back or something though. Jon

So yeah, the "muddy water" is probably my fault. A mixture of pressure washer and a wee bit of diluted engine cleaner stuff from work. Has only been sitting in there for about 2 days before you picked it up though......
