Have I made a mistake?

Have I made a mistake? I put one of my seirra donor front uprights/hub into my electrolsis bath overnight. It's now cleaned, painted and looking cool, but...... the hub is now very slightly harder to turn and feels a bit gravelly. Have I made an error by putting the complete item into the bath???

Yep i would say its washed the grease out of the bearings.

Yep. Sounds like it, I did'nt put ours in for that reason. The dust seals are not completely water proof.. But I did beed blast them instead, even with string and tape on em I wonder if I've got some crud in em time will tell!

definitely will have washed most of the grease away. But as you haven't put any load on them you'll probably get away with stripping them down, cleaning everthing thoroughly, repacking with the correct grease and rebuilding. You can then replace the dust seals while you've got them apart and will also get the chance to see if the bearings are worn as well.

oh bu**er. I'll have to strip and clean up the bearings. Any idea what grease to use? Do ford/motorfactors sell the dust caps?

Slater, I did just the same, and when I stripped the hubs, hoping to just clean and grease, found that being in the bath had stuffed them completely. Remove bearings prior to electrolysis treatment, easy to be wise after the event. Still I now have new bearing all round. Regards Ray

i got my dust caps from a local motorfactor, they were genuine ford items too!

i asked recently on here and was told any moly or lithium grease is fine.

I electrolysis'd a whole upright/hub assembly - but only to aid dissasembly. Can't see how the static water in the tank would have washed much grease out from under the seals - more likely water has gotten in and you have some light surface rust on the bearing surfaces. Maybe some dirt too. Either way you'll need to strip and rebuild.
