Gearbox to short??
Markp - 30/7/03 at 06:16 PM

I've used mk2 escort running gear for almost the whole car, now it's on the road I'm not happy that the gear stick is miles away from me.

I have heard of this problem a few times but now I have come to alter it I can't find any help on the subject.

Does anyone know how I can bring the gear stick forward, make an extension etc.

Cheers for the help.
Mark

Hacksaw through the aluminium casting under the remote gear stick change and hacksaw through the remote steel connecting rod. The stick can now be brought back by adding length to the rod. An Allegro steering column extension will do as it has 2 UJs. The cut piece of aluminium casting holding the stick remote can then be secured to a flat plate with 2 U bolts. Works a treat.

NB flats will have to be filed on the extension bar to locate the bolts in the UJ's

Hmmm... sounds complicated

and not too many Allegro's in the breakers nowadays lol Well not down here anyway

Check out Jim Dudley's book - pics in there to make an easy gearbox remote. Note the use of 2 nylocs as a locknut.......

Hi markp have placed a drg in photo archive. you can make the support bracket as long as you like, you will have to raise up your tranny tunnel to hide the mechanism but it works fine on my car, also remove the spring from under the original gear stick so that it drops and operates below the reverse detent, plus i made up a gate to stop selecting reverse inadvertantly check photo. cheers davef.

Thanx for the picture it's a great help

Just a couple of questions.
on the original part of the gear stick you replaced a nut with a metal one, what part was it and where do you get them?

What did you use to hold the new gear stick so that it can move side to side and down?

Thanx again for the help so far, it was something like this I origanlly saw.

Cheers

Hi Markp the unit holding the new gearstick is a 10mm spherical rod end or rose joint, the replacement nut is made from aluminium it was bought as a replacement for the nylon one, as they are famous for stuffing up and popping out, i am sure if they are available over here in SA they must be available in the UK. forgot to mention if you go to page 132 in the second edition book you can just see in fig 13,38 photo the small green hyd pipe clamp under the car, use half of one of these units to sit on the gearbox top tube for the u bolt to pass through. cheers davef.
