sierra rear calipers wont retract????
markrally73 - 4/7/07 at 05:47 AM

Im Just replacing pads but i cant wind the piston in anymore than a 35 mm gap for some reason so i cant get my pads to fit in there as the disc is 9mm and each pad is 13.5mm so i need at least another 1mm of retraction??

I have disconnected the handbrake cables completely. pistons wind out easy enough but wont go back anymore???

They were new recon calipers 12 months ago and only done just over a 1000 miles but ive fited bigger discs so new pads are going on.

Anyone got any ideas or genuine info from a ford service manual??

Cheers

Are you winding them and applying pressure to push them back in?

I found that if I just wound them round all the way, I couldn't push them in so far, but if I wound them and then applied slight pressure (using a g clamp with the end knocked off - which fit neatly inside my grinder spanner that I was using to wind them in) at the same time it went back loads!

Slacken off the handbrake cable before you start.
Lightly push the pistons in as you turn them.
Do not use excessive force

Afterward fitting the pads pump the pads back into contact with the disk before re-adjusting the handbrake cable;
Follow exactly instruction in Sierra manual for adjusting handbrake cable tension.

I did the same thing, lightly press back the piston, I used a welding clamp and then turned it with a grinding disc tightening tool otherwise it just spins and spins

i bought a caliper wind back tool from Halfords for less than 20 quid. Came in handy several times. Defo worth having.
