Autoprop UK prop bhp rating
Lars - 21/11/07 at 07:14 PM

Hi

Does anyone know how many bhp I can put through an Autoprop propshaft?

Mine uses 2" tubing, and I seem to remember that there was some sort of limit.

Just wondering to check if it will be OK to use with a zetec, possibly with turbo.

Or is there anyone who has run an Autoprop propshaft with a zetec?

try it. if it breaks, lesson learned

I think it should be ok with a zetec with a turbo. though i don't know if there's a max bhp. maybe ask the manufacturer what they recommend?

yes, if no-one knows i'll give them a call tomorrow

My propshaft manufacturer implied that power and torque handling should be determined by the UJs as the tubing should be fine.

Cheers

Would it not depend on diff, tyre stickyness as well as torque/bhp?

And maybe RPM?

as well as the tube itself not sure a 14mm diameter tube, with 0.6 wall thickness would last long.

I think you need to take everything into account.

2" tube though, at a guess i'd say 300bhp maybe?

The length is important. The shorter the shaft the more power.

I would use 2" tube for a prop up to about 500mm overall length if the engine had up to 100bhp.

Any more than this I would go up in tube dia.

Spoke to them today and was told that there is no specific rating.

They build it based on what people say their engine and application is when they order.

For stronger props they will use larger/stronger uj's, but (as I understood it) the tube remains the same, at 2".

(However they now use slightly thicker tube, but was unable to tell me what mine was made of.)

I used tube thickness of either 0.095" or 0.064"

I use a 2" x 600mm ish prop in my locost with 200hp........................

Its what caterham used in all their HPC's with the same engine, mines a retubed caterham one.

Just measured mine and it is also about 600mm.

If it fails is it likely to snap or will it slowly wear out the uj's?

NS Dev do you know what thickness yours is? Or how much it weighs?
