Whats the best way to shorten my xr4 handbrake cable, the loops on the end dont seem to be crimped on but they could be, i wondered whether silver soldering would be possioble. Is there any regulations to do with this for the SVA? Thanks

Silver solder won't be anywhere near strong enough. They'd need to be braised at least. My plan is to cut the cable in the middle and use some of those U bolt things to loop it over the end of the handbrake.

did mine with a peice of 3mm strip,drill holes as in a 5 playing card,put cable ends up,across and down through the outside holes and bolt n washer through the centre hole,if you get my drift

They shortened the cable and crimped on a new nipple. Its now fitted and works very well. IMO much better way than trying to do it home bearing in mind the work the cable needs to do, and it looks very neat.

Anybody know anywhere that does that near york or hull??

That's about 5 miles from me, not exactly handy for Selby though. I used a 'U' clamp and it's well up to the job. You don't actually see much of it in the tunnel.

One way of shortening a cable:
cut cable to required length. drill a hole through a small brass bolt - down the length of the bolt. This hole should be a little bigger than the dia of the cable. Put the cable through and splay the ends of the individual cables out. Make sure its clean then put a big blob of solder in the middle.

This makes a strong join as the cable can not pull back through the hole

Why would it fail SVA?

I know if they see it, it will fail, buut there is no chance they will see it, unless they bring a drill!!

Its stupid that it would fail, it is so strong the cable snapped when we made a test piece!!!

Just reread your post and realised that you were quoting what i had written!

It has been a while since i read the manula but i thin the general concensus on here is that a soldered on nipple will fail sva. Or have i dreamt this??
