English Axle measurements please...
owelly - 18/4/08 at 04:51 PM

Following the demise of the diff in my English axle, I was given "a crappy old axle of a trailer". The crappy old axle has an LSD and looks to be an Atlas.
I have measured the 'Atlas' and from (half shaft) flange to flange, it is 57". It has no drums fitted as it came with a disc set-up!
I seem to think that the English is narrower. I'll still fit the Atlas but it will mean building a new trailer as the current one was built to fit the car with an English axle!!
So, could someone confirm the width of the English axle, from hub face/flange to hub face/flange.
Cheers.

Just measured a spare english (Mk2 escort) axle in the shed and it`s 48 5/8ths wide to the outside of the flanges .
57" sounds a bit wide..........

too slow although that size sounds strange i've got near as damit dead on an inch boundry in my head for some reason. Possibly because i meansured with the drums on, not to the half shaft.

hmm, i thought my atlas was 52" before i hacked it up beyond recognition...

Escort English (not the only width of english axle that was made) is 48" inches across the the axle tube flanges nb not the halfshaft flanges.

A Cortina Mk3-5 axle is 4" wider.

I've just checked my measurements and it is 57" flange to flange. I'll go and check the tube flange measurements.

It's 2.25(ish) inches from the outside of the halfshaft flange to the outside of the tube flange.
So, 57"-(2X2.25)=52.5"
Or thereabouts as it's not easy holding up a stack of tyres with one hand, fending off random heavy components with the other and using a tape measure and torch with remaining two hands.....

Could it be a capri 2.8I axle? some of these had LSDs, unfortunately the one I managed to get didnt have so sold it on but do remeber it was a fair bit wider than the escort axle.

Thanks and bugger.
The atlas is too wide so I need to widen the rear arches on the car and build a bigger trailer........great.......
