Squeezing tight boots over steering rack.
TimC - 24/5/08 at 02:34 PM

Ugh - Afternoon All.

The boots that I have fior my rack are quite stretchy but a complete nightmare to get on;

Does anyone have any tips? I've had to walk away from the job for now - infuriating!

Cheers

I like girls in tight boots..........

when I've had that problem I find a nice log thin screwdriver helps, bit like putting a tyre on ? Put one side on a slide the driver around feeding the rest on, not as easy as it reads but @,m sure you'll get there.

Cut your nails, put on a decent pair of gloves () and just sacrifice those fingers!!!

They will go on!

i eventually managed by a combination of grease/oil, long screwdriver as described above, and also the thick end of some tie wraps, so that they poke outwards inside the rubber, have someone help by pulling on them gently, and the part poking out should grip the inside of the rubber, and should pull over the rack. thats what i did, with some sucess. although i did it on my own with only 3 tie wraps. a helper and about 6-8 tie wraps should be a lot easier

YES!
steve's right, cut your nails. i didn't (i hate the way they feel when they've just been cut... i'm a wuss, and i have long finger nails lol) i bent one of my nails right back... wasn't amused.

Put them in some boiling water first to make them more plyable.

WD40 the inside of the rim and a flat driver to shoehorn them on. If it's an Escort rack one end is bigger than the other isn't it?

Warming the boot up in hot water certainly helps, but you have to work quickly before it cools. Silicone grease works well too.

Did you get a fitting cone with them?? If so, throw it in the bin.
