About to get some mdf for the dash - which thickness do I need? 12mm / 18mm / 25mm / or....
Hi, What are you building a sherman tank, i used 6mm and this was almost to thick for my toggle switches.
thanks for that, I thought if I made it thicker, I wouldn't have to stretch as far to the switches!!!
my carbon dash is only about 3mm thick. 6mm will be more than fine.
won't MDF swell up if it gets damp though?
If it's for IVA remember the radius bottom edge.. If you go thin you will need to add something, rather than carving it out of the dash, the
radius is quite large (can't remember the number).
Dan
19mm (radius) springs to mind
That's great, thanks for your responses - 6mm it is - might be an idea to seal it with nitrate dope to prevent damp ingress. I am planning to
IVA it, but 19mm is easily achieved in wood, I think.
Cheers, everyone!
Just remember that it's 19mm RADIUS, not diameter - in other words, 38mm diameter. It's quite a big radius to get on the bottom of a wooden dash (I used ply, with an extra layer stuck on the back at the bottom to give enough material to achieve the shape)
I used 6mm mdf with a wooden batons glued along the bottom edge, then radiused to 19mm (38mm dia) with a spoke shave/sandpaper, then sealed it all
with mdf primer, gloss paint and then a coat of dry film lube for a pro satin finish.

Would marine ply + varnish nor have been easier?

Ply gives you wood grain to get rid off mdf is smooth.
Cant remember if mines 6mm or 9mm. Either ways its good and doesnt flex. i used foam around the bottom and they let me through sva.
I used 4mm ply Put a strengthening strip / bar at the bottom and job's a good'un.
Bit off topic but... Slater I'm pre IVA with the same steering wheel as you have in the picture. Do you know if it will pass IVA like that as i
had to throw away the centre pad due to mouse damage! If not I'll have to buy another??
Cheers
