the quick release lever should always point backwards - reason being it can get caught and be undone if facing forwards.

I always point them forwards, that way they're shielded by the frame a bit, if they're any where near tight enough, they're not being
opened by being caught on something.
and if they are, you're too busy examining the floor with your face to care about it. 
and more importantly, WHO GIVES A FECK, its the wifes bike
