Why does the engine need a rebuild?

i'm in south wales. engine needs a rebuild cos i think part off a sparkplug fell into one off the bores. as i could not find it.. also engine is old so just saying it needs a rebuild not confuse people. you may pull head off and its ok i just dont know!!
