JAW wideband lambda
ChrisW - 15/5/08 at 07:37 PM

JAW Wideband lambda units, as seen here:

http://14point7.com/JAW/JAW.htm

Great idea, reasonable price, but the 20-day lead time to delivery of just the kit doesn't sound great to me, and it's even longer if you want it assembled. Plus I suspect a lot of people would be put off by the soldering aspect!

So... anyone interested in a group buy? I'll buy the PCBs and controllers, have them shipped over here, acquire the parts locally and assemble/test them. Need to buy 10 units minimum.

So, question is, can I get 10 people interested in an assembled unit, shipped from the UK (so no customs to worry about), built and tested. You just need to supply the lambda sensor.

Complete unit, with the display, for £60, delivered to your door.

EDIT: I now also have a supplier for the lambda sensor plug, grommets and terminals as specified on the JAW website (LINK) Will be able to supply all the parts needed (excluding the sensor of course) for an additional £8. You don't need these bits, but it will make your installation a lot neater!

Anyone interested please reply below

Cheers, Chris

That was me, sort-of...

C&E didn't charge me any duty, which they would have done if it was electronic 'luxury goods' (20%). It was a VAT charge, which is hard to argue against, plus an £8 handling charge from Royal Fail.

So you could probably take Chris's figure, expect 17.5% VAT and your share of the handling charge (80p) - nowhere near as expensive as mine!

zetec - 15/5/08 at 09:10 PM

I'm interested, how much for a wideband sensor?

MkIndy7 - 15/5/08 at 09:10 PM

Not related to your group purchase but i'd consider getting the display as well or some indication as to what the Lambda is reading when its on the car.

When your tuneing obviously you have the laptop.. but when its all tuned up i'd lie to leave the laptop at home!
but then you'd have no idea what its doing should there develop a small problem with anything.

zzr1100rick2 - 15/5/08 at 09:16 PM

Im very interested its the next thing i have to get to set up my fueling

GaryM - 16/5/08 at 08:05 AM

Yep, count me in

nre - 16/5/08 at 09:14 AM

I could be interested but have no need for the display - would you consider doing a kit without display, and if so what price?

Thanks,

Neil

ChrisW - 16/5/08 at 10:06 AM

I'm doing the group buy for units and displays together, but perhaps have a word with Robocog and come up with an agreement? I'll happily send the two parts of one kit to different addresses, as long as you cover the postage.

Chris

ChrisW - 16/5/08 at 01:20 PM

Right, so far we have...

big_wasa
richard thomas
zzr1100rick2
robocog/nre (half each!)
martynv
viatron
tim windmill
garym

+ me makes 9.

One more confirmed and we're on!

Chris

fazerruss - 16/5/08 at 01:37 PM

erm this looks interesting.ive got a megasquirt myself and im unsure as to if i would need one of these to set it all up. what would be a rough cost for all the bits to have the one like what mtech sell for a couple of hunderd quid.

ChrisW - 16/5/08 at 01:57 PM

Not sure what MTec sell, but this unit is fully compatable with Megasquirt, meaning it will auto-tune, and therefore save you a fortune in rolling road costs. Also will assist in tuning your MS to give the best power output.

Note to all.... see the edit in the first post about the lambda plug. Now have a supplier!

Chris

MikeRJ - 16/5/08 at 03:19 PM

If there's any chance of buying just the PCB, controller and lambda plug I'd be interested? I have pretty much all the rest of the components needed in my stock of bits. If it makes it too complicated then no worries.

ecosse - 16/5/08 at 05:16 PM

Can you add me to the list please Chris?

Cheers

You can get the PCB and programmed controller from the JAW site (you might have to hunt for it on the site). Much cheaper, but you'll probably still have to pay tax and handling charge as the total will be slightly more than the £18 limit (unless you can persuade the supplier to show its value as the dollar equivalent of £17.95p! )

paulf - 16/5/08 at 08:41 PM

M Tech sell the Vems wideband unit.It seems a good controller and is a neat looking gauge but not Locost. This unit does the same job apart from not having a facility for EGT input.I wouldnt buy from M Tech however as there service is a bit erratic in my experience.
The Jaw unit will need a case and the display mounting somehow, I have one and am just working out how to fit it in a decent case.
Paul.

Just waiting to hear back from the guy that makes them with regard to stock. Anyone else want to get in before the order gets sent?

For info....

1. I've had a couple of people ask about my electronics experience as I'm going to be putting the units together. I studied electronics for 3 years, then did 3 year apprenticeship in at the BBC doing mainly diagnosis and repair of electronic circuitry. Worked there for a further 7 years. Although I don't do it for a living any more, it's still a hobby. Units like the JAW, Megasquirt, Megajolt, etc I can put together with my eyes closed!

2. I'm not prepared to sell them as a kit of parts for the simple reason that I don't want to get involved with returns. If I build them, test them, and send them out as complete units there can be no arguements over whether a component is dodgy, or whether the board has just been built badly.

Cheers, Chris

ChrisW - 20/5/08 at 08:32 AM

Rob

As above, and quoted below, I'm not prepared to supply in kit form. I will solder the IDC connector on backwards however if you want to flush mount.

If you MUST have it in kit form, you'll have to order yourself from the States.

Cheers, Chris

MikeR - 20/5/08 at 12:21 PM

Seem to recall you can get Lambda sensors from range rovers etc. I want to get one - but the 90 quid for the lambda makes this a bit steep. what's the deal if i want to use a different sensor (ie do i have to change anything / tell you anything different).

How do you want paying & when?

ChrisW - 20/5/08 at 03:30 PM

quote:

That's the best I've managed to get so far on the sensor itself so far.

I'll put up some Paypal links in a couple of days to make the payments. The choices will be:

1. Unit and display, built and tested, as per $115 option on JAW website - £60

2. As 1, but including optional VW bits to make up the lambda cable - £68

3. As 1, but including Bosch LSU 4.2 wideband sensor (brand new) - £90

4. Unit, display, sensor and plug - £98

The only thing you WILL NOT get in the kits is the spade terminals for making the 'cheap' lambda lead. Two reasons for this, first being that it's a bodge solution that no self-respecting LB member should consider when the 'proper' parts are only £8, and second because you can pick them up locally very easy if you do want to bodge it!

Cheers, Chris

ChrisW - 20/5/08 at 03:32 PM

Forgot to say... the Lambda sensors come from VW cars. Late model Golfs and Beetles if I remember correctly. If you can find one in a scrappy, that's all good, but I personally don't see many of them around here.

Personally, I don't think £30 is a bad price for a new one. Certainly not seen them any cheaper in the UK!

Chris

It's a superb price, less than most places are selling a genuine Bosch narrow band sensor for.

I don't think any Range Rovers apart from perhaps the very latest had wideband sensors.

MikeR - 20/5/08 at 10:03 PM

When do you need to know by?

(ie i want to say yes i just need to have that debate with myself that says "do you really want this?"

ChrisW - 20/5/08 at 11:18 PM

I'm still waiting to hear back from Alan, the chap at JAW. Seems I'm not the only one either!

I'll get some Paypal links up for ordering as soon as I've heard from him, then it will be a case of 'as soon as everyone has paid'.

Chris

ChrisW - 21/5/08 at 03:02 PM

Have to admit something guys.... I've screwed up on the lambda sensor price.

The quote I've got for £30 is for the Bosch 0258007206 sensor which has the 'wrong' plug. Whether it would work with a JAW I can't be sure at the moment.

However, the same supplier can get me the recommended 0258007057 (aka 17014) sensor for an additional $10 - around £5 on the final price.

So, the options for sensors will be:

1. Bosch 0258007057 - the recommended one with the 'correct' plug - £35

2. Bosch P/N 0258007206 which may well work, but I can't get plug for, so you'd have to use terminals - £30

Still waiting to hear from Alan (JAW creator), which is what is holding the buy up at the moment.

Cheers, Chris

Put me down for option 4.

Would be good if the display could be surface mounted.

Made a couple of phone calls today and the best I could get a sensor for would be £60 from one of my usual suppliers without doing a lot of searching.

I'm up for option 4 as well Chris, do you know if they will be the newer 1.04 type board? Detailed HERE

Cheers

Rich

ChrisW - 23/5/08 at 12:38 AM

Board will be the 1.03 version I suspect, as the 1.04 is still in development (as I understand it) and only being sent out singly as a prototype.

Chris

ChrisW - 23/5/08 at 05:22 PM

We're ready to go... Alan has got back to me and confirmed stock, so just need you all to pay now!

Very quick and dirty page I knocked up with some Paypal links on it. If you wish to avoid the fees, you can post me a cheque, or BACS money directly to me.

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/jaw.html

Anyone can order a sensor, you don't have to be on the list. Closing date is 30th May, or when everyone on the list has paid, whichever comes sooner. If you're not on the list and want a unit, get in as soon as possible!

Cheers, Chris

Paid via paypal,
option 4 please with the display flush mounted.cheers. Tim

David Jenkins - 29/5/08 at 02:48 PM

As a matter of interest... why the need to flush-mount the display?

Those 7-segment LED displays have terrible contrast without a red or grey filter in front - in anything other than half-light you'll have trouble reading the numbers. And, if you're going to fit a filter anyway, you might as well leave the display board as standard and set it back a little (also improves the visibility a bit).

I bought some see-through red perspex last week, which is perfect as a filter.

If you don't believe me, I'll take some photos of my display in its new shiny Maplins box with and without its red perspex lid!

Any progress on the JAW units Chris?

ChrisW - 12/6/08 at 12:11 AM

Apology time guys...

Been stupidly busy - had three court cases on the go for the past fortnight and havn't had a chance to do anything other than work. Had to go down to my workshop today - first time in nearly 3 weeks - just to check the pikeys hadn't had all my gear away!

I was sure everyone would be quite rightly pi&%ed off with me by now so first off....

1. If anyone wants a refund due to the time it has taken me to sort this, please let me know and I'll reverse the Paypal payment straight away

Now, to answer the flood of questions I've had via u2u/email:

2. If anyone still wants in, please get payments in ASAP. No need to check with me first, just pay using the links (you don't need a Paypal account, just punch in your card details and their site will do the rest)

3. If anyone is still waiting for BACS or cheque details, as I've lost track of who I have sent them to, please ask again. I'd prefer Paypal where possible, as it makes my life a lot easier, but if you must use another method I will deal with it.

4. You will get a return email saying that my chris@locostbuilders address is no longer in use. It's fine to ignore this - the payment will come through fine as Paypal is still registered to that address, it's just the email account I no longer use. Put 2007 before the @ if you want to email me.

Payments list is as follows:

richard thomas - JAW Option 4
GaryM - JAW Option 4
Tangerine Scream - JAW Option 4
MikeRJ - JAW Option 4
big_wasa - JAW Option 4
kyanther - JAW Option 4
zetec - JAW Option 4 Reversed
tim windmill - JAW Option 4
phoenix70 - JAW Option 4 Reversed
ecosse - JAW Option 4 Reversed
MikeRJ - JAW Option 4
RichardK - JAW Option 4 Reversed
adithorp - JAW Option 4 Reversed

If anyone wants reversed display plugs, and it's not indicated on the list above, please advise ASAP.

I'd prefer contact by EMAIL if at all possible

Anyone wanting to send cheques/BACS that has not got the details from me and advised me that payment is on the way by MONDAY 16th I will assume is no longer interested. All payments must be in by the time my post arrives on THURSDAY 26th (1 week today). That allows those posting cheques plenty of time. I will place the order on that afternoon.

Apologies again, hope nobody is too upset (see point 1 above if so)

Cheers, Chris

I keep debating having the plug reversed .....

The more i think about it the more it makes sense as it gives me options on how to mount the display but with the risk of having a thicker display unit.

I know some are doing it, what about others - thoughts?

David Jenkins - 14/6/08 at 08:50 PM

As I've said before - these LED 7-segment displays have lousy contrast in bright light. They are only clear when there is some form of filter in front, whether it's red or grey. Mine has a sheet of 3mm red perspex across the front of a Maplins box.

If you're going to fit a filter then you need to mount the display board further back, in which case the standard connector arrangement works perfectly well.

ChrisW - 15/6/08 at 01:21 PM

Remember guys...

If you're sending BACS or cheque payment, tomorrow is the deadline!

Luckily for the others, I've had no one (so far) tell me a cheque is on the way this time around, so the order might be able to be placed a couple of days earlier.

There's still time for Paypal payments if you want in, whether you were on the original group buy list or not.

Cheers, Chris

ChrisW - 18/6/08 at 02:03 PM

24 hours to go!

If you want in, get cracking with the Paypal links (above). I'll be placing the orders around this time tomorrow.

Hi Chris, Hope you don't mind if I ask a couple of questions, have you any news, have they been ordered, has Alan given you any indication if he had enough stock to dispatch straight away? So excited! Sad I know!

Just a quick question, I understand you will be testing the boards and readers individually but what about the lambdas, will you be testing the lambda sensor (free air cal) with the specific JAW that's being shipped?

Cheers

Rich

ChrisW - 26/6/08 at 02:29 PM

I finally managed to get hold of Alan yesterday - what a nightmare that was - and finalise the order with him.

His email was sent at 16:38 his time (00:38 our time) and promised the units would be sent 'tomorrow' and that I'd have a tracking number. Waiting on that at the moment.

In the mean time, the lambda sensors left the Chicago USPS facility, which is reasonably local to my US address, this morning... so I assume they will arrive there today.

Components are ordered, but there is a delay on one of the voltage regulators. Still waiting to hear from them, but I will chase that today.

To clarify the above - I'm having everything sent to an associate of mine in the US, who will box it all up and ship everything over to me in one go.

Only thing that's being a pain in the arse at the moment is the only parts I'm sourcing in the UK - the VW sensor plugs and leads!!

Now there is a surprise Who would have thought that. Looks like things are getting there. It does seem like Alan is a very difficult guy to get hold of just visiting his forum.

Thanks again for sorting this anyway.
Cheers

ChrisW - 27/6/08 at 12:05 PM

More news:

Lambdas have arrived at my US address

All components are now ordered. What a mess about - try getting Futurelec to answer a simple query via email! Ended up sourcing a lot of the parts from Digikey instead

Alan has shipped the boards and CPUs

VW parts were paid for this morning and are on their way straight to me.

As for testing - yes, I intend to test each complete setup. The only thing I won't be doing is assembling the VW bits, as I'll leave it up to you as to exactly how you want to go about that part. I'll make up my harness and use that to test each JAW and lambda in free air.

IF my car is done in time, I might even test each JAW unit on my car... but that's very much time dependant!

Photo of lambda sensors below....

ChrisW - 3/7/08 at 04:33 PM

Another update: A second box has arrived in the US. Waiting to find out who it's from.

My card has been charged for all the parts now, so expecting deliveries both here and on the other side of the pond any day now!

Cheers, Chris

ChrisW - 3/7/08 at 04:54 PM

Just been told it's two boxes. One from Toronto (which will be the JAW PCB's and MCU's), and the other from Digikey, which is some of the IC's needed from the board.

Hopefully my US guy will take a quick snap for me so I can show you all!

Chris

meany - 4/7/08 at 02:53 PM

ChrisW - 8/7/08 at 06:57 PM

Chased up the last package today, and got a tracking number. Turns out the bits are being shipped from Thailand!! WTF???

Proper angry, as I paid for 2-3 day delivery, and it took them over a week to dispatch.

Still, hopefully they'll arrive in the US tomorrow.

Chris

meany - 9/7/08 at 07:13 PM

thanks for the update Chris

There's the trick, 2-3 days for delivery, but they didn't say how long it would take to actually dispatch

Cheers
Alex

ChrisW - 11/7/08 at 10:43 AM

Another update!

The VW bits have arrived here and all look good.

All the electronic bits have arrived in America. Just arranging shipping over here, and I'll be able to start assembling!

No idea if i do want it on the top or bottom but thought i'd ask anyway ! (yes i am that sad)

Yes. u2u me. The longer you leave it though, the more likely it will be to get done in the standard way.

Any chance of a little update on this ?

MikeRJ - 17/8/08 at 09:14 PM

It's the 3 month anniversary of the JAW group buy, an update would be nice...

zetec - 17/8/08 at 10:37 PM

Ditto.

RichardK - 18/8/08 at 12:56 PM

I u2u'd Chris a few days ago and he promised to update this thread shortly but I got the impression he was having problems with US customs, I'm sure he'll update the thread shortly.
Cheers

Rich

MikeRJ - 19/8/08 at 11:50 AM

I U2U'd him 11 days ago and he said he was going to update the thread then. He's obviously an extremely busy man, but a couple of minutes just to keep everyone informed of progress keep peoples interests up and impatience levels down...

zetec - 27/8/08 at 10:29 PM

Anyone heard anything? Is Chris on holiday...? Beginning to wish I had just spent a little more and ordered one direct.

MikeRJ - 28/8/08 at 03:00 PM

I U2U'd him again a few days back but have heard nothing. I'm feeling a bit of a pillock as I told my brother I'd help map his Elise when I got it, but wasn't expecting to take months.

His last post was on the 9th August, perhaps he is out of the country? Would have been nice to let us know though.

Fozzie - 30/8/08 at 09:33 PM

Firstly, I do apologise for not keeping up to speed with this thread, as those who know me know I am a dinosaur when it comes to mega wotsits, JAW etc etc. So it isn't a subject I have a personal interest in.

Secondly, those who know me, know that I have been mega busy, following a fire at one of the units where we have our business, which sadly spread to our unit...

Eight fire units attended, so I will leave it there for now, except to say DLT and I are devastated, but in turn, counting ourselves very, very lucky in the fact that we had a 4 year resto that had just been completed and valued at 150k that was virtually untouched........

I have decided that God was sitting inside it having his Sunday lunch at the time!

Anyway...... I digress...

I have managed to have a quick word with Chris on all of your behalves.

Here is an update......

The stuff arrived at Customs......

They got sent back.... (by them, not Chris)

They then lost them

They were found, and sent back to customs.

Chris filled in the forms.....

The forms got sent back.... (repeatedly)

The stuff is now with Chris.......

So...it shouldn't be too long now before they start winging their way to you lot.

Fozzie

That's great news to hear that Chris now has the bits, looking forward to getting my Jaw soon and been able to get on with my build.

Thanks for the update Fozzie.

zetec - 9/9/08 at 12:12 PM

Anymore news yet..? See Chris has not posted for a month now...has he forgot about us? Has anyone got theirs yet?

Fozzie - 10/9/08 at 02:23 PM

Yes... more news......

Update:-

I have just 'spoken' with Chris...

The JAWS are all built and tested, with the last of them finished at 4am this morning....

All that's left to do now, is get them packaged and sent off to you all.

HTH Fozzie

All is in hand...

Fozzie

zetec - 25/9/08 at 09:34 PM

Anyone got theirs yet? I know the Royal Mail can be slow but this is getting a bit silly.

Fozzie - 25/9/08 at 09:49 PM

After constant badgering (nagging), I have seen (by photo) all of your items packaged in brown Jiffy bags awaiting to go to the post office

I am assured that they went by royal mail, recorded/signed for delivery

I also have been given the tracking numbers for each of you, but I have just been on Royal Mails site to 'test', and they say the item is only trackable once they have been delivered and signed for! .... which seems a bit daft

I am looking forward to hearing that they have started arriving....

Guys, I have done my best!

Fozzie

Ridiculous isn't it. I ordered some items from Hong Kong about 6 weeks ago, and they haven't turned up. Seller has given me a tracking number that shows the item left HK but when you enter it into the Royal Mail system it says exactly the same. A 'tracking' system whose only functionality is to let you know that you have signed for your parcel, you could hardly make it up!

Anyway thanks for the update Fozzie, much appreciated!

I cannot see your name anywhere, unless of course you have 'another' name.

I do have tracking numbers for all of those mentioned above.

This purchase/group buy is nothing to do with me, I just got involved with a bit of nagging.

Can you please u2u me a copy of your order form and receipt from paypal, and I will raise your query with chrisw.

MikeRJ - 10/11/08 at 10:23 PM

Just in case anyone is remotely interested, I posted the schematic of the 1.03 board on the JAW forum.

Hopefully Alan won't mind, but as he's not posted on the forum for a month (though has signed into it several times) and hasn't answered my email I'm guessing he's either busy with other stuff or has lost interest.
