Hi all,

I’m planning on taking a week off work in early March to try and drop the engine into my car and complete a few other jobs.

Just wandering if anyone in the Glasgow area would have an engine hoist they'd be willing to let me borrow for the week in exchange for some beer tokens. Alternatively someone might have one for sale? If borrowing, I'd be happy to leave a deposit equivalent to the value of the hoist.

Yep, its only a little R1 engine, but I am quite weak haha! Think its quite do-able with two people and no hoist?

From a recent discussion on the Sylva Google Group, it looks like most people have had to modify the position of the engine using spacers under the mounts to achieve better sump clearance and desired engine angle. I was thinking that moving the engine about a bit to adjust the angle and height would be much easier with a hoist.

2 helpers, chain round the engine, steel pipe through the chain and over the shoulders. te remaning person shouts the necessary orders etc.

Have you put a floor into the bottom of your engine bay? If not (I assume not) then once you have lifted then engine into the engine bay, then you can support it from underneath with various bits of wood so sort out the final adjustments.

The lifting in really does require 2 (I did do mine on my own on one occasion, but its difficult not to damage the powder coat, or your back), but once its in and on a few bits of wood then small movements are really easy. So, 2 people, no hoist but some preparation and you will be fine. My dad helped me and he is nearly 70.

The other way to do it (while sorting out mountings) is to lift the chassis over the engine. By this I mean put the engine on floor and pop the chassis over it. The Fury chassis with wishbones (assuming similar weight to Phoenix) is about the same weight as the engine, but the handles are better!


The bit of wood/pole and engine hanging off it would make things even easier. It is worth putting some card against the chassis rails to minimise scratching the powdercoat.

You will put it in and take it out a few times before you are finished, unavoidable.

Dave, really kind of you to offer to help me with the engine, but although I live and work in Glasgow, I'm building the car at my parents' house down near Stranraer. Madness, I know!

Good to hear that it can be done without the use of a hoist, I could probably recruit a friend or two to help out and do it the manual way! If I can't, Davg or Andy, I'd really appreciate a loan of your hoist, can I send you a u2u nearer the time? (The car is in a shed with large steel rafters which I think I could hang a hoist from.)

Excellent, thanks :-) Actually, a crane might be more useful as I think the shed could be a bit too tall to hang a chain hoist from. I'll get in touch later in February :-)
